2018 Shorter University graduates


Commencement will take place on Shorter University’s campus in the Winthrop-King Centre on Thursday, May 2, 2019 at 10:00am.

The Winthrop-King Centre is #15 on our campus map.  Parking on campus is available in event parking near the Welcome Center, the Commuter Lots near the library, and the gravel lot next to the Winthrop-King Centre.  Handicapped parking is available in front of the Winthrop-King Centre.  No parking is allowed on the grass at any time.

Shuttles from the Ledbetter College of Business in the Midtown Center Shopping Center will also be available starting at 8:30am with ample parking.  It is located just across from our main campus, and directions can be found here.

Overflow Seating

Overflow seating is available in Brookes Chapel where the ceremony will be broadcast live on the big screen.  No tickets are required for entry.

Brookes Chapel is located in on the second floor of the Cooper Fine Arts Building, #17 on our campus map.  Stair and elevator access is available.

Attendance at commencement is strongly encouraged. Graduates must register through the graduation application and the Graduation Confirmation form in Scholar to indicate their intent to participate in the commencement ceremony.  The Graduation Confirmation form opens January 18 and closes March 27.  If you have any questions about this form or the application, please contact the Registrar’s Office at or 706-233-7205.

Graduate Line-up

Graduates will line up 90 minutes prior to the start of commencement. Please arrive no later than 8:30 a.m. for check-in and lineup.

Personal Item Storage

There will be no storage area or security for personal items left in the check in location at the commencement site.

Cap & Gowns/Regalia

Candidates for graduation will receive an email to their Shorter University hawkmail account containing cap and gown ordering instructions in mid to late January. If you are planning to attend the commencement ceremony and have not received that email by February 1, then please email and a staff member will review your account promptly.

Orders must be made by the deadline in order to receive the cap and gown in time to walk on graduation day. After the deadline, a cap and gown is not guaranteed and graduates may be responsible for paying rush shipping/production fees. Each graduate must wear his or her own cap and gown to commencement. Caps and gowns for all graduates are ordered and paid for online individually by each graduate. Only approved Shorter Academic stoles/cords may be worn over a graduation gown. A blue and white honor cord will be provided at commencement during check-in to undergraduate students earning Latin Honors. The criteria used for determining Latin Honors is located in the academic catalog academic policies & procedures / degrees with honors section. All other cords and stoles must on the approved list held by the Registrar’s Office. To determine whether or not other cords or stoles are on the approved list, please email a picture of it along with a description to and a staff member will promptly reply to your question.

IMPORTANT: Commencement is an academic ceremony meriting dignity in dress and behavior. Attire under the cap and gown should be dark slacks and shoes for men and dark clothing and shoes for ladies. No graduate is allowed to place anything on his/her cap, gown, or hood. Graduates who arrive with decorated or embellished caps or hoods will have their hood/cap confiscated. They may process in and sit with the other graduates, but will not be permitted to walk across the stage. A security officer will be present to escort those from the line who are non-compliant.


All guests must present a ticket for entry into the ceremony (this includes infants and children). Tickets are requested by graduates through the Graduation Confirmation form on Scholar.  Distribution details will be sent to each graduate via their Shorter University hawkmail account in February. Financial Obligations

All financial obligations to the University must be cleared before the commencement ceremony in order to receive guest tickets, participate in the ceremony, and receive a diploma. This includes library fines and all other fines and fees collected by the Business Office. If you owe a balance, please call the Business Office at 706-233-7222 to resolve any outstanding holds or balances quickly.

Graduates will be presented with a diploma cover when walking across the stage at the ceremony. After the ceremony, diplomas will be distributed at the check-in location to May graduates. May graduates who do not attend commencement may pick-up their diplomas the week after the ceremony in the Registrar’s Office.  If not picked up at that time, diplomas for May graduates will be mailed.

August and December graduates receive their diplomas 3-4 weeks after their conferral date.  Conferral is usually one week after the last day of the semester.  An email regarding conferral and diplomas will be sent to graduates on or just after August and December conferral.  August and December graduates can pick their diplomas in the Registrar’s office by responding to the email sent from our office after conferral.  Those who do not respond requesting pick-up will be mailed their diplomas.

Graduates who attend the commencement ceremony will receive a diploma cover with embossed University logo and seal. Diploma covers are also available for pick-up at the Registrar’s Office   for graduates who are unable to attend commencement at no charge. Any graduate who wants a diploma cover mailed must sent a request to  There will be a $10 postage fee for domestic shipping.  International shipping is not available for diploma covers.
