Shorter University has announced recipients of competitive scholarships for the 2017-18 academic year.

Please note: Only those students who returned a news release form to the Public Relations Office are included in this release.

The J. Robert and Hazel B. Eubanks Scholarship provides tuition, room, and board for incoming freshmen for eight semesters. To qualify for this scholarship, a student must hold at least a 3.5 grade point average and a 1300 SAT (in critical reading and math) or 28 ACT score. Scholarship recipients must then maintain a 3.5 cumulative grade point average at Shorter. Eubanks Scholarship recipients include:

Jefferson, Ga., resident Joy Romano. Romano is the daughter of Mark and Pam Romano and is a senior at Jefferson High School. She is a three-time Chick-fil-A Character Award recipient and a member of the Beta Club and National Honor Society of High School Scholars. Romano owns Created in His Image Photography and has volunteered at Camp Hope for many summers. She has taken part in a mission trip to Bulgaria and Jefferson High School’s Scotland Student Exchange program and is active in theatre at her high school.

Nicholson, Ga., resident Heidi Seagraves. Seagraves is the daughter of Marty and Tammy Seagraves. A senior at Lacoda Farms Homeschool, she is a dual-enrolled student at Athens Technical College. She is a member of the Jackson County Livestock Show Team and 4-H and serves as a camp counselor at Lacoda Farms Boot Camp. She is vice president of the Georgia Junior Simmental Association and is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. Seagraves has received the Ed Tolbert Memorial Scholarship and the Farm Bureau Academic Award. She is a teen volunteer at Athens Regional Medical Center, a dance buddy for special needs dance classes, a volleyball player for Barrow County Christian Academy, and a dance instructor at Graceful Gospel Dance Academy. She is a VBS crew leader at Maysville Baptist Church, serves on the Faith outreach team, the Operation Christmas Child workforce team, and team effort missions.

The Presidential Scholarship provides tuition for incoming freshmen for eight semesters. To qualify for this scholarship, a student must hold at least a 3.5 grade point average and a 1100 SAT (in critical reading and math) or 24 ACT score. Scholarship recipients must then maintain a 3.25 cumulative grade point average at Shorter. Presidential Scholarship recipients include:

McDonough, Ga., resident Cayle Hope Davis. Davis is the daughter of Chris and Lauren Davis and is a senior at Locust Grove High School. She served as a manager for the football team from 2013 to 2015 and is a member of the National Beta Club and the National Honor Society. Since 2015, she has been a dual-enrolled student at Clayton State University. She is co-founder of a girls Bible study at her high school.

Crossville, Ala., resident Iva Claire Luther. Luther is the daughter of Gary and Carla Luther and is a senior at Crossville High School. She is the recipient of the DAR Good Citizen Award and serves as president of both the Senior Beta Club and the Creative Arts Club. She was a junior marshal and attended Alabama Girls State. She is a member of Crossville First Baptist Church.

Boaz, Ala., resident Savannah Lane Orange. Orange is the daughter of Devan and Cristy Orange and is a senior at Sardis High School, where she has been a member of the Student Government Association from her 9th through 12th grade years and served as SGA president during her senior year. She is a member of Beta Club, Spanish Club and Junior Civitan and is involved in the Etowah Youth Symphony Orchestra and Sardis High School’s Marching Band. She was a state cheerleading champion in 2015 and dance line captain during her senior year. A dual enrolled student at the University of Alabama for three years, Orange plans to attend Shorter University and then go to law school.

Cedar Bluff, Ala., resident Noah Wofford. Wofford is the son of Jeremy and Tanya Wofford and a senior at Fort Payne High School. He is a member of the Mu Alpha Theta mathematics honors society, the French Honors Society and the National Honors Society. He is a three-time Real World Design Challenge State Champion who maintains a 4.0 GPA. He received the Kiwanis Club Good Citizen Award and was a Patriots Memorial Park Design Collaborator. He is active in the youth choir and drama department at First Baptist Church of Fort Payne.

The Alfred Shorter/Provost Scholarship provides three-quarters of tuition for incoming freshmen for eight semesters. To qualify for this scholarship, a student must hold at least a 3.5 grade point average and an 1100 SAT (in critical reading and math) or 24 ACT score. Scholarship recipients must then maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average at Shorter. Alfred Shorter/Provost Scholarship recipients include:

Walnut Grove, Ga., resident Ryan Baker. Baker is the son of Jeff and Patty Baker and is a senior at Walnut Grove High School. He has been a member of the Walnut Grove High School Marching Warrior Band for four years and is a member of the CV Indoor Competition Drum Corps. He is a member of the Church at the Grove, Walnut Grove campus, and is employed at Your Pie in Covington. He is active in the Beta Club, National Honors Society and Youth Leadership Walton.

Gray, Ga., resident Leslie Rebekah Bennett. Bennett is the daughter of Robert C. Bennett, Jr., and Penelope S. Bennett. She is a senior at Jones County High School, where she has taken 13 honors classes and six Advanced Placement classes. She received honors in Broadcast Journalism and American Sign Language. She is a member of the National Beta Club and the marching and symphonic bands. She plays flute and piccolo and was drum major during her senior year. She won first place Drum Major in Division AA at the Oconee Classic Marching Competition and the Heart of Georgia Marching Competition. Bennett is a member of Northridge Baptist Church. She has participated in Bible Drill for nine years and was second-place finisher in the Georgia State Bible Drill in 2013 and 2015. She participated in Student Speakers Competition for two years and in the Student Leadership Apprentice Program with Fuge Camps.

Springfield, Ga., resident Shelby Lee Burgess. She is the daughter of Bobby and Charity Burgess of Springfield. She is a senior at Effingham County High School and a member of the International Thespian Society. She was selected to be on the Region All-Star Cast in 2015 and 2016 and serves as video board operator for Effingham County High’s football program.

Mentone, Ala., resident Kacy Corsentino. Corsentino is the daughter of Patrick and Stacy Corsentino and is a senior at Fort Payne High School. She is a member of the National Honors Society, the French National Honors Society, and Mu Alpha Theta mathematics honor society.

Leesburg, Ga., resident Makenzie Lacey. Lacey is the daughter of Chris and Amanda Eubanks and Blake and Cindy Lacey. She is a senior at Lee County High School. Lacey was named Miss Lee County High School 2016, is president of the FCCLA chapter, and a member of the National Technical Honors Society.

Tega Cay, S.C., resident Erika Joy Mason. Mason is the daughter of Chris and Lillian Mason and is a senior at the Cornelius School for Creative Leadership. She has taken honors courses throughout high school and maintained academic excellence. She displays her passion for music, taking piano, voice, and theatre classes. She plans on majoring in Music – Vocal Performance at Shorter.  She is currently in a Narroway Productions play in Fort Mill, S.C.

Rome, Ga., resident Morgan Randall Maxwell. Maxwell is the son of Charles and Amber Maxwell and is a homeschool student who has maintained a 3.95 grade point average. A member of Salem Baptist Church in Calhoun, he received the AWANA Alpha and Excellence awards, has served for several years as church audio technician and is active in the youth group. He is a SPLASH Gordon participant and regular entrant in the Coosa Valley Fair, where he has received multiple awards in arts, crafts and agriculture. Maxwell volunteers at the Calhoun Pregnancy Center and is involved in UKS Karate, having attained the rank of brown belt and having served in a leadership position on the S.W.A.T. Team.

Brewton, Ala., resident Joshua Cole Winton. Winton is the son of Randy and Rachel Winton of Brewton and is a senior at T.R. Miller High School, where he has earned a 4.2 grade-point average in the Honors Program. He received the HOBY Award, the Hugh O’Brien Leadership Award, the Ronnie Massey Scholarship Award from the Alabama Football Coaches Association, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Challenger Award for Christian Leadership (athletic), and the John Finkler Christian Athlete Award. He is chaplain for the Student Government Association and serves as president of FCA. He is a student ministry leader at First Baptist Church of Brewton and took part in a mission trip to Costa Rica.

Guyton, Ga., resident Ethan Westley Radcliffe. He is the son of Toni Acquilino and Brian Radcliffe. He is a senior at South Effingham High School. He will be a walk on for the Shorter Hawks baseball team and plans to major in nursing and then further his education to become an orthopaedic surgeon. At South Effingham, he is a member of the National Honor Society and the Beta Club and has earned the lifetime high honor roll (4.0 GPA), a GPA Award in Baseball for 9th-12^th grade, a varsity letter in baseball, the GPA Award in Football for 9^th and 10^th grades. He is active in many volunteer activities such as Relay for Life, Girls on the Run, and Operation Christmas Child and has taken Honors and Advanced Placement classes throughout his high school career.

Milan, Ga., resident Clayton Scarborough. Scarborough, the son of Clay and Joy Scarborough, is a senior at Dodge County High School.
