Alumni Governing Board
All Alumni are eligible to be nominated to serve on the Alumni Governing Board. The Alumni Governing Board is a group of alumni who give of their time through service to the University, as well as financially support the University. They help in leading the Alumni Association and participating in the planning of campus events such as Homecoming and Alumni Association Chapter events, and to encourage contributions intellectually, financially and spiritually to Shorter University. Distinguished Alumni Awards
The highlight of Homecoming is the naming of the Shorter graduates receiving the Distinguished Alumni Awards. These highly regarded recognitions given by the Shorter University Alumni Association fall into three categories.
The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes an alum who has demonstrated outstanding professional achievement, public service, or accomplishment in the arts and sciences.
The Distinguished Service Award is presented to an Alumnus who has given outstanding service to the University in leadership, volunteerism, on-campus service, recruiting efforts, or financial support.
The Distinguished Young Alumnus Award honors a Shorter University graduate from the past 15 years who has shown promise through their professional achievement, community service, and/or dedication to the University, and who embrace the Shorter University mission.

Because we realize the value of you sharing your experience, we want to encourage more alumni to be involved in the recruiting process. We have developed a Student Referral Form to help make the task of referring students to the Shorter University Admissions Office easier. Don’t worry if you don’t know all the information; simply fill in what you can.

Each year the University hosts our annual alumni weekend at Homecoming. We strive to provide enjoyable engagement opportunities to relive cherished memories while creating new ones. The Shorter University Alumni Association’s Alumni Governing Board continues to work diligently to raise support for student scholarships. Currently, there are three scholarship awards annually: the Alumni Leadership Scholarship, the Carol Williams Kirby Alumni Service Scholarship and the Dr. Wayne W. Dempsey Memorial Alumni Legacy Scholarship. The awards process begins with a call for nominations from the faculty and staff of Shorter University and nominees are reviewed and selected by the Scholarship Committee of the Alumni Governing Board.
- The Alumni Leadership Scholarship is given to students who exhibit proven leadership skills through on-campus activities and who demonstrate the desire and potential to use these skills as members of the Shorter University Alumni Association.
- The Carol Williams Kirby Service Scholarship is designed to recognize and reward Shorter students who have a demonstrated desire to serve on behalf of Shorter, both on campus and in the community.
- The Dr. Wayne W. Dempsey Memorial Legacy Award is presented to a student who has a parent or sibling who holds a degree from Shorter University.
