Title: The Last Enemy: Christianity and Harry Potter

Hayden Lanier is a senior Middle Grades Education major from Tallapoosa, Georgia. He plans to be a preacher and a middle-grade teacher to share God’s Word and positively impact people’s lives (not just for the notoriously great pay both jobs offer). At Shorter, Hayden has enjoyed being a part of BCM and getting to know many of his fellow students through that ministry. Some of Hayden’s hobbies include rereading books he read in middle and high school, writing whatever ideas come to mind, attempting to play a variety of songs on the piano, laughing with friends and family, and walking around outside to hear what the birds are singing. Hayden is very grateful to be able to share his honors thesis and nerd out about two of his greatest passions: the gospel, first and foremost, but also Harry Potter.

Abstract

My proposal for “Celebrate Shorter” is to present my honors thesis. My honors thesis is a paper on Christianity in Harry Potter. Specifically, it is a look at two direct Scripture quotes included in the final Harry Potter book and why Christians should not be opposed to reading this work of literature or watching the accompanying movies because of the Christian themes present. It also explains the story of Harry Potter, how these verses from the Bible relate to the story, what their inclusion means for Christians as a point of application.

Title: From Chopin to Coldplay: How Music and Sleep are Intertwined

Olivia Lendach is a sophomore vocal performance major and dance minor from Hayesville, North Carolina. She has been featured in many music performances at Shorter, and she will be featured at the Choral Masterwork: A Night at the Opera concert this April. Aside from music, Olivia is a member of the Shorter Art League and enjoys other activities such as going to Barnes N Noble, shopping with her friends, and spending late nights at the library. She would like to thank the Lord for bringing her to Shorter and giving her the opportunities she has had thus far. She would also like to thank her parents for their support and help, and her closest people, Hanna, Chloe, and Evan for their love, care, and drive to see her succeed.  She hopes that her work, ”From Chopin to Coldplay: How Music and Sleep are Intertwined” will help people find a newfound appreciation for her deepest passion, music.

Abstract

Every year around the beginning of December, millions of people frantically open Spotify to look at the past year’s Spotify Wrapped. With Spotify and many other music streaming platforms having lots of daily activity, it’s no doubt that music is an essential part of a person’s daily life. The way Dr. William E. Cayley Jr. phrases it is that “music is a key part of the fabric of [our] lives, and people respond to music in various ways.” Music is a simple and easily accessible tool for relaxing the body and mind. One seen benefit of listening to music is that it can be used as a sleep aid, which at the surface seems to be the exact opposite of the goal of music. Therefore, the question that persists is this: what causes music to be a helpful sleep aid? What genre of music is most efficient in this? Music can be a beneficial aid to helping people of all ages sleep as many studies have proven that the reactions and connections music makes to the brain produce positive effects for the listener. Also, for believers, the topic of spiritual rest is one that is not discussed often. How are we as Christians meant to act in times of great distress? What does it mean to rest in the Lord? There are many studies and commentaries that answer this exact question. Both physical and spiritual rest are integral parts of our lives, and they are more important than usually assumed.

Title: Dosage Form Performance Assessment of Commercially-Available Soft Gel Capsules Containing Essential Oils

Bailey is a senior biochemistry major from Olive Branch, Mississippi. Bailey will be attending the Ole Miss School of Pharmacy next fall to pursue her Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Bailey enjoys spending time with family and friends, going to the gym, going on walks outside, watching basketball and soccer games, and catching up on shows and movies in her free time. Bailey also enjoys traveling back home to watch her sister run track and cross country and her brother play soccer.

Abstract

Soft gels are colloidal systems used in the dietary supplement industry as semisolid delivery systems for oils. Essential oils are often combined with less volatile fixed oils to improve disruption. The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) gives guidelines and recommendations for the testing of dietary supplements. Disruption testing of essential oil products revealed that 58% of gels failed to disrupt within 30 minutes, while only 10% of fixed oil gels failed. Lot-to-lot variability was observed, and it is difficult to determine the exact problem due to formulation differences. Poor disruption can significantly impact product efficacy. Future research should include inserting essential oils into several types of gelatins, conducting dissolution testing and chemical analysis of each essential oil in each gelatin, and testing essential oils in other dosage forms like oral solutions. Dietary supplements are often used by individuals to improve their health and overall function by ingesting extra vitamins and minerals. In 1 Timothy 4:8, Paul says “For physical training is of some value, but Godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” In this verse Paul argues that a believer’s body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. God cares about human physical comfort and well-being which is shown throughout the bible. Dietary supplements are important as they are considered a more natural way for humans to treat their body as a temple to live a life that glorifies God.

Title: Bridging the Gap: Spiritual Formation and Cultural Intelligence in International Missions

Mckenzie Livingston is a senior Christian Studies and Communication Studies major at Shorter University. She is being honored in Celebrate Shorter for her honor’s thesis work in discipleship. Balancing academics with soccer, Mckenzie has spent hours serving and ministering to others with her talents both on the field and in the classroom. Growing in discipline, resilience, and leadership, Mckenzie continues to work towards building community on campus and in her future career working in non-profits.

Abstract

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus Christ commands the disciples to go out to all the world, carry the good news of the gospel, and make disciples of all nations. However, the world’s diversity and cultural differences introduce unexpected obstacles while simultaneously providing unique opportunities for connection and community. Spiritual formation and the process of sanctification draw us near to the transforming power of the Lord. To efficiently evangelize and make disciples worldwide, believers need to take responsibility for their discipleship and intercultural communication skills and work as the body of the Church to partner with leaders across cultures and the world.

Evaluating the American church and our Western influence is vital to understanding our development. If we do not have a firm foundation in the Lord for ourselves, we cannot possibly share the gospel across cultures. First, the American church needs to prioritize the spiritual formation of believers in the church. Missionaries must be rooted in the Word of God and pray consistently. Engaging in community and corporate worship cultivates a humble and service-minded heart. As we develop and mature personally, naturally, we desire to share God’s transforming love with others.

Once we have an established foundation of faith, missionaries must have cultural intelligence and intercultural communication skills. Today’s global interconnectedness creates a unique tension. Missionaries must learn to look past their traditions and biases related to the gospel and contextualize and reach others. Eliminating ethnocentric mindsets, preparing for culture shock, and learning about the values and traditions of other cultures prepare missionaries to contextualize the gospel and love others the way Christ has loved them.

When we mature spiritually and cultivate intercultural communication skills and understanding, the church can better serve those around us. Intentionally partnering with long-term missionaries and local Christian leaders will ensure that evangelism does not fall on rocky soil and that discipleship will occur. Equipping local leaders allows the good news to faithfully and radically transform cultures worldwide. We are not missionaries sent out to fix other cultures but to share Christ’s good news.

Title: Progress on Pay Transparency

Kensley Williamson is a senior from Cedartown GA, with a double major in the business school here at Shorter University. Her majors include General Business and Business Management. She is also pursuing a minor in dance appreciation. Kensley has always had a love for dance, after graduation she hopes to own a Christ centered dance studio one day. She is also a member of the Kappa Chi chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha. Kensley’s Bible verse she holds dear is Ephesians 6:10 “Finally my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might.”

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to give an understanding of a current trend in human resources, which is progress on pay transparency. As well as bringing the background of this trend of transparency to light; revealing how is has been and why it needs to change. This transparency is vital to prevent employee separation and retain retention. Transparency is also needed regarding pay structure decisions, as well as revealing employee benefits. Ultimately transparency is needed when looking at people and business through biblical lens. This biblical lens is people being commanded to be honest and truthful in all that they do. This relates to being honest in regard to pay transparency; how it is important for employees to feel that sense of trust within the organization. So, having that transparency in place creates that more holistic approach. We are commanded to be honest, and this honesty applies to everything we do.

Title: Long-Term Cognitive Impairments Associated with the Administration of Epidiolex in Patients Diagnosed with Epilepsy

Logan Martin is a passionate student from Plainville, Georgia, working to finish his bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in Psychology. He has worked as a physical therapy aide at a local outpatient clinic, where he gained hands-on patient experience and a deep desire to serve others. Logan is especially fascinated by neuroscience and the intricate design of the human body, which he sees as a living testimony of God’s wonder. His professors at Shorter University helped instill in him a love for teaching, and he hopes to one day teach and encourage other students in their studies, especially in the sciences. To Logan, science is “thinking God’s thoughts after Him,” and he delights in exploring and sharing the wonder of God’s creation. Outside the classroom and clinic, he enjoys woodworking, going for walks, and spending time with his best friend, Audrey. Faith plays a central role in his life, and he’s known for bringing laughter into every room he enters. Logan will begin the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at South College in June 2025 and is excited about all that God has in store for him (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Abstract

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder that is characterized by recurrent seizures that are not caused by an acute insult. The disorder affects approximately 1% of the global population, and while anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) remain the gold standard in treatment, many patients experience adverse effects, leading them to seek alternative treatments. Cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive cannabinoid, has emerged as a promising treatment option. Epidiolex, the first FDA-approved CBD-based medication, has demonstrated efficacy in reducing seizure frequency, yet the long-term cognitive effects remain unclear. The current study aims to address these concerns through a six-year randomized trial involving participants aged 18–40, utilizing the NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery to track cognitive function over time. Mixed-effects modeling will be employed to analyze trends, addressing concerns about potential cognitive decline. The study hypothesizes that Epidiolex will lead to minimal long-term cognitive impact, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of Epidiolex safety profile. As Christians, we recognize the mind as fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14) and believe that medical research should align with Biblical principles of stewardship and compassion. The study not only seeks to provide scientific clarity but also maintains the ethical responsibility to protect cognitive well-being in treatment decisions. By prioritizing patient health and honoring God’s design, this research aims to guide clinicians in optimizing epilepsy care while honoring the dignity and complexity of human cognition. Future studies should explore biomarker-based mechanisms and potential interactions between Epidiolex and the gut-brain axis to further enhance treatment protocols.

Title: Preparing and Executing Social Media Strategies

Natalie Tankersley is a sophomore Communication Studies major who collects social media accounts like Thanos collects infinity stones. When she isn’t managing social media, she is taking too many pictures with her camera, designing new graphics, drinking way too much caffeine, and writing. Natalie has been published fifteen times in various magazines. As president of her sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha, she is constantly collaborating on events, snapping pictures, spending time with her sisters, and being the life of the party. After she graduates, Natalie wants to live out her Elle Woods dream of heading to law school. You can follow along with her journey on her Instagram, account, n.t.gail.

Abstract

Creating and maintaining a social media strategy is a vital part of keeping a company, industry, or a person relevant in today’s culture. It is no longer enough to simply create content and post it on social media. The strategy should hold true to the original purpose of the page while also being flexible enough to accommodate current trends, new ideas, and anything relevant to the page’s purpose. In this project, I created a social media strategy for the Shorter University Communication Studies Department’s Instagram account. The main goal of the page is to appeal to prospective students while also remaining relevant to current students. This presentation focuses on how I created the strategy and showcases the content created for the page.

Social media can be a difficult topic in Christian circles because of the effects it can have on mental health and its addictive properties. Through the discussion of the Instagram algorithm, the strategy behind social media, and by creating an actual content strategy plan, this project creates context and background understanding which would allow people to distance themselves from their accounts. I hope to demonstrate how social media is a tool that we should use instead of allowing social media to

Title: More Than Just Crucifixes

Anna Roberts is a junior English major. When she’s not hunched over on the floor typing a paper on her laptop, she’s probably baking sourdough bread, walking through the woods, hanging out by a river, or writing poems in fits of divine madness. Her writing is frequently inspired by her Christian faith, British writers, and nature. After she graduates from Shorter, she hopes to go to grad school to continue her academic career and keep exploring her favorite types of literature. She desperately hopes that her future school experiences will be devoid of anything related to Gertrude Stein and filled with poetry written by the English Romantics, Tennyson, and Hopkins.

Abstract

It’s common knowledge that vampires are repelled by crucifixes and holy water, but most trope-filled flicks about the creatures rarely go beyond the surface level. While Bram Stoker’s Dracula utilizes these iconic symbols, the religious imagery in the novel goes deeper than the general lore everyone knows about. Stoker’s story is set in Victorian England when industrialization and technology were on the rise, but in Dracula, he deemphasizes the materialistic world in favor of the spiritual one. Through complex and layered Christian imagery, Stoker contrasts the titular character with Jesus Himself instead of only having the vampire be repelled by the symbol of Jesus’ sacrifice. While pop culture vampire stories share some elements with the novel, Stoker’s depiction adds depth by contrasting Dracula and his associate Renfield with specific biblical figures to emphasize the destructive nature of sin and evil. Through these contrasts and religious imagery, Dracula and his associates display the Philosophy of Hell that C.S. Lewis describes in The Screwtape Letters.

Title: Sports Beyond a Scoreboard: The Game of Life

Tatiana, known by her friends as Tati, is 21 years old and the youngest of three siblings. She is currently living one of her biggest dreams of being a student-athlete in the US to play soccer. Despite it being her favorite sport ever, she competed in swimming and was part of the judo and capoeira teams when she was younger, growing up in Brazil, her home country. In her spare time, she enjoys playing guitar, pandeiro (tambourine), and ukulele. Tati’s remarkable trait is to not give up on achieving her goals and her dedication while working towards them. She gets that from her family, who have always been her best examples of hard work and also share the same love for soccer and Corinthians, the best soccer team from Brazil. In pursuit of her major in Sport Management, she aspires to influence people’s lives and be for others what some people have been to her.

Abstract

Everyone, from South to North and from East to West of the globe, has been involved with sports at some point in their life, it is a fact. At any level or circumstances played,

sports are universal and that is exactly what makes it such a powerful tool in society if used with purpose. Unfortunately, nowadays, ego, status, and even deviant overconformity have gained the spotlight over integrity, servant leadership, and character. However, through purposeful sports management and coaching, sports can still be a reliant source of influence in shaping future generations.

This proposal explores the sportive scenario from inside-out, embracing sports beyond any scoreboard, aiming to focus on what should come in first place: the game of life. Promoted by A Higher Standard of Leadership, an initiative by Dr. Marty Durden – a key staff member at Shorter University – relies on fundamental elements that have proven to be influential and life changing. From a captain player to a coach on the sidelines, to an athletic director, if one first becomes a servant in order to lead, they will score more points in the game of life than any common leader out there.

In other words, the privilege of a Christian perspective hosts a transformative role in leading and managing sports. This proposal is capable of approaching sports as a ministry, where lives are purposely influenced through ethical, and character-based leadership and management, instead of just as a career. More importantly than that, in the game of life, both sports management and faith can coexist and transform the athletic realm.

Abstract

Coronary artery disease is characterized by the atherosclerotic plaque buildup in the arterial lumen. This cardiovascular disease is a chronic and asymptomatic, until occlusion of the coronary arteries strains the cardiac pumping. This strain results in some parts of the cardiac muscle to experience decreased levels of nutrition, oxygen, hypertension, ischemic cardiomyopathy and overall decrease. This is the cardiac health of people with coronary artery disease. The arterial occlusion is derived from the platelet aggregation of plaque deposits within vascular endothelial lining. The goal of the proposed therapy is to provide an effective alternative to traditional procedures, such as coronary artery bypass grafts, percutaneous coronary interventions, utilizing nano-medication and photobiomodulation, specifically infrared radiation, to treat coronary artery disease. The nano-medication is comprised of a cholesterol-lowering medication and nanocarriers. Ezetimibe will be used as the medication and inhibits NPC1L1, which uptakes of cholesterol in the intestines. This medication will reduce the plaque deposits in vasculature. The nanocarriers improves the biodistribution and pharmacokinetics of the medication, increasing the efficacy of medication. Nanocarriers will decrease the severity of adverse effects due to the increase of the medication bioavailability. The infrared radiation causes several therapeutic effects that will relieve the effects of coronary artery disease. This includes reactive oxygen species generation, nitric oxide synthase activation, and neural stimulation. Reactive oxygen species generation will target the arterial blockage by denaturing the lumen blockage. Nitric oxide synthase activation will lead to vasodilation, allowing for greater blood flow which will decrease blood pressure and distribution of nutrients and oxygen. The increase of nitric oxide will also decrease platelet aggregation. The neural stimulation will release norepinephrine, leading to increase cardiac muscle contraction. The combination of these therapeutic effects will lead to an overall progression of cardiovascular health and reduce the risks of myocardial infarctions.

God through his omniscience and omnipotence created every molecule, every cell, and every mechanism. God is seen in every scientific innovation and advancement as they are reflections of His divine design for His creations. God isn’t like light but is light, which is reflected in the therapeutic effects of the electromagnetic spectrum, specifically infrared light. Everyone in or pursuing professions in healthcare and research are first servants of Jesus Christ and should reflect this when treating patients. With this in mind, light therapy enables us to treat patients as minimally invasive as possible to otherwise individuals who would be too weak for a major procedure. God has designed a world for us to utilize His brilliance in treating patients while planting seeds of faith through our walk in faith as healthcare professionals.

Professionally, he aspires to pursue a career in research with an emphasis in immunology, pathology and cancer research.

Abstract

Cancer is a large group of diseases characterized by continuous, uncontrolled, and rapid cellular proliferation of undifferentiated cells. Cancer is often fatal and caused by various carcinogens including ultraviolet radiation, mycotoxins, chemicals, viruses, and genetic predisposition. Prostate cancer is a form of cancer localized in the male prostate gland. An estimated 1 in 8 males will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Current interventions for prostate cancer include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormone therapy, and surgery which are often used in combination to provide the most favorable prognosis. Adoptive cell therapy is a form of immunotherapy focusing on chimeric antigen receptors (CAR) to genetically engineer a patient’s existing immune cells to recognize and combat cancer. B7-H3 is a checkpoint molecule that is often shown to be overexpressed on antigen presenting cells (APC) in cases of prostate cancer. B7-H3 exhibits costimulatory characteristics once bound to the appropriate receptor which aids in recruitment of immune cells to the tumor. The TREM like transcript-2 receptor (TLT-2) is a receptor for B7-H3 to exhibit costimulatory activity once bound. Using Adoptive cell therapy, immune cells will be genetically altered to exhibit the TLT-2 receptor and be reintroduced to the tumor with the objective of ceased tumor growth.

Additionally, he enjoys spending time with friends and family, journaling, listening and dancing to music, reading about Korean history, and learning the Korean language, with the long-term goal of taking the TOPIK (Test Of Proficiency In Korean) exams.

Abstract

This research aims to introduce the audience to Korea’s modern history, which includes the peninsula’s division and the politics of the Republic of Korea (South Korea) and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea). Moreover, this will specifically focus on the Sunshine Policy, an initiative in which the South Korean government extended multiple olive branches toward North Korea, sending them large sums of aid, employing thousands of North Koreans in Southern-led business projects, and even the first inter-Korean summit between President Kim Dae Jung (ROK) and leader Kim Jong-Il of the DPRK. Due to the promising nature of this strategy, Kim Dae Jung was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2000 for his efforts toward peace within his homeland. Although the Sunshine Policy was later deemed a failure, the topic still requires more examination to grasp the tragedy of North Korea, the future of the regime, and the outlook for the Korean peninsula as a whole.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of different disinfectant sprays in reducing microbial contamination across different areas within a college athletic environment. Samples will be collected from four different locations: the weight room, the football locker room, the women’s volleyball/basketball locker room, the athletic training center, and the gym. The plates will be swabbed using standardized environmental sampling techniques and exposed to three different disinfectant sprays, alongside a control group. Each plate will be divided into four quadrants, with each quadrant representing one of the following: a control sample and three disinfectant sprays. Plates will be monitored regularly, and photos will be taken to track microbial growth. All of the disinfectant sprays and other procedures will all follow the manufacturer instructions, like recommended application times, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for swabbing and sample collection. This study ultimate goal is to compare the effectiveness of various disinfectants in maintaining cleanliness in high-traffic, athletic environments, providing insights into best practices for surface sanitation in these spaces in order to keep athletes healthy.
