Shorter University Student Scholars Attend Alpha Chi Annual Event
Shorter University students Stephanie Marrero, Kayla Avery, Erin Nordman, and Laura Williams have been selected as program presenters during the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society annual convention in Louisville, Ky., April 6-8, 2017. Anthony Nordman will be representing Shorter University as a delegate, and Shorter graduate Sarah Geil will be serving her last term as student officer.
This convention highlights student research and creative presentations from across the nation. Dr. John Janovy, Jr., noted scientist, author, and educator, will present the keynote address at the awards Gala Saturday evening. Dr. Ed Madden, award-winning poet and professor at the University of South Carolina will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award.
Student presentations, grouped by academic discipline, are adjudicated by faculty advisors attending the convention, and 30 presentation prizes recognizing outstanding research and creative entries are awarded at the culminating session of the convention.
“Presenting at the annual convention offers a national platform for the original research and creativity of our members. Because we’re a general honor society, the projects may be in anything from accounting to zoology. Seeing their projects alongside those of their peers from around the country is a valuable academic experience, and their participation shines a positive spotlight on the student, their chapter, and their campus,” said Dr. Trisha Yarbrough, Alpha Chi Executive Director.
Dr. Barsha Pickell is the official chapter sponsor at Shorter University, and Dr. Kathi Vosevich, Shorter’s associate provost and dean of the university’s College of Arts and Sciences, serves as Vice-President of Region III, as well as a judge of British Literature sections. Alpha Chi chapter sponsors are instrumental in mentoring student members, including preparing them for presentation at a national convention.
Alpha Chi National College Honor Society invites to membership juniors, seniors, and graduate students from all disciplines in the top ten percent of their class. Active on nearly 300 campuses nationwide, Alpha Chi is a member in good standing of the Association of College Honor Societies, the only national accrediting body for honor societies. In February 2022, Alpha Chi will celebrate 100 years of “making scholarship effective for good.”
