My Shorter Story: Devin Wallace - Shorter University

“Transferring to Shorter allowed me to get that push I needed in the right direction, to transform my life. I found out not who I am, but Whose I am. That has given me the peace and confidence to face today’s chaotic world.” — Devin Wallace, Class of 2019

Devin Wallace transferred to Shorter University with the goal of running track and soon found himself only milliseconds away from breaking the school’s Track and Field 4x100m Relay Record at the national championship.

But for Devin, his time at Shorter led to an even greater moment: being baptized on his 21st birthday (October 29, 2017). “Talk about getting ‘turnt,’” he said with his characteristic smile.  Through Shorter, he found a welcoming church family at HBC Rome, which led him to a moment “a year later, stepping towards my calling and speaking to the youth and feeling the Holy Spirit speak through me for the first time.”

The future now looks different for Devin, a Houston, Texas, resident who studies in Shorter’s Ledbetter College of Business.

“I initially wanted to work my way into a chief marketing officer role for a major company or become a sports marketer for a professional or collegiate team. However, I feel God might have a different plan for me. It could have something to do with teaching youth in churches. Stay tuned.”

Professors Dr. Dub Darville and Dr. Heath Hooper have had a tremendous impact on Devin’s life. “They welcomed me into the College of Business with open arms and made my transition from Texas easier. Both are men of God who have opened up their doors when I needed them.”

Devin is also thankful for his close group of friends and supportive staff members, who also have made a difference. “God knew I needed a strong set of people around me in order for me to take steps in the right direction. I am beyond blessed to be on the Hill with such example-setting individuals.”

Devin’s athletic scholarship drew him to Shorter “Without this scholarship, I wouldn’t have made the trip from Texas. I am very grateful to Shorter Athletics for granting the resources I needed financially. I am also thankful for all of Shorter’s donors. Without financial help, circumstances would be a lot different for so many students. Shorter’s donors are a blessing to this campus.”

In addition to running track, Devin plays football, is a resident advisor and student ambassador, and served as a Shorter Orientation Staff member.
