Miller named GSC Track Athlete of the Year, Hawks move up to 4th in DII

Lester Miller earned Gulf South Conference Track Athlete of the Year honors after an impressive weekend at the GSC Championships.
On the weekend, Miller secured an automatic qualification in the 100m dash, winning in a time of 10.28. The mark is .06 off the school record, set in the 2014 by Kirk Wilson, and is the second fastest time in the DII this season. While, his 200m time from the Championships – 20.85 – is third best this year. Miller also added a second gold medal for the weekend, running the anchor leg on the 4x100m relay that posted a time of 40.31.
Twice this year, Miller earned Runner of the Week honors.
The weekend also bolstered the Hawks’ footing as one of the top teams in the country, as they moved up seven spots – from 11 to 4 – in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll, entering the final weeks of the season.
The GSC Championships saw the Hawks post five top-10 descending order list marks. Miller laid claim to two of those, in the 100 meters and in the 200 meters. Jonathan Ross added the 3rd-best mark in the 110 hurdles at 13.86, securing an automatic qualification, while Wake Roberds ran a 52.29 in the 400 hurdles, good for 1st at the Championships and 10th in DII. The Hawks 4×100 relay team also posted the 2nd-fastest time in the country.
Currently on the season, the Hawks have four automatic qualifications to DII Nationals. In addition to Miller and Ross, Dejon Devroe has qualified in the 800m, and the 4×400 team of Roberds, Todd Woddring, Christian Smith and Deangelo Harris have earned qualifications. Harris and Smith are also within the top-10 in individual events, Harris in the 400m and Smith in the 400m hurdles.
The DII Outdoor Championships are set for May 25-27 at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
