CONVOCATION & CELEBRATION
WHAT IS CONVOCATION?
Convocation is the summons of people together to conduct business. For academia, convocation is a gathering signaling the welcoming of a new class of students into the academic community. For Shorter University, this event symbolizes passing the responsibility for the freshman from the Office of Admissions to the Schools and Faculty.
The goal of such a formal ceremony to recognize this passing is to promote a community of learners with students realizing their identity as a class and important part of the community and with faculty and staff displaying their involvement and commitment to the student learners. The formal ceremony concludes with faculty and staff welcoming, in two rows with loud applause, the incoming class through the gate, “Enter to Learn.” It is at commencement ceremonies where those graduating from this class leave our community of learners through the parallel gate, “Serve Christ.”
