Shorter University had two representatives elected to the National Council of the Alpha Chi Honor Society. Dr. Kathi Vosevich, associate provost and chapter sponsor, was elected to serve as faculty member-at-large, and Kayla Avery was elected by Region III to serve as its student representative. Dr. Vosevich still serves as Vice-President of Region III, the largest region of Alpha Chi.

Vosevich and Avery were among a newly elected group that included a new regional secretary-treasuer, two new faculty members and four new student representatives, who joined the honor society’s chief governing body. The 22-member board is composed of 15 faculty members and seven students.

Generally, the faculty, who also serve as sponsors of local chapters, complete four-year terms, and the students are elected to two-year terms. They work via committees year-round and culminate the work year in a national board meeting held during the society’s annual national convention.

Others elected include Ana Yanes-Garcia, a student at Texas State University, who was elected by Region I delegates to represent its student members on the National Council until 2019. Dr. David Jones of Westminster College in Missouri, currently serving as National Council president, was reelected to serve at-large for another four years. Elliot Collins, a student from West Liberty University in West Virginia, will serve as the new student representative for Region V. Dr. Agashi Nwogbaga, professor of mathematics and primary chapter sponsor of Alpha Chi at Wesley College in Delaware will begin his first four-year term as member-at-large to the National Council, and Dr. Bonita Cade of Roger Williams University in Rhode Island was re-elected to serve her second at-large term on the Council. Dr. Jacquelyn Kegley, professor of philosophy and religious studies at California State University, Bakersfield, was elected by Region VII to fill its vacant secretary-treasurer position until 2019. Zach Merhavy of Grand Canyon University in Arizona will represent the students for Region VII for a two-year term.

Shorter’s Alpha Chi chapter has earned recognition as a Star Chapter for seven consecutive years and a key to keeping that status is the chapter’s work to host a series of service projects, which are a perfect fit for Shorter’s commitment to excellence in academics, spiritual growth, Christian leadership and global service within the context of a biblical worldview, according to chapter adviser Dr. Barsha Pickell.
