What should freshmen know about peer mentors?

Peer mentors are upperclassmen who have gone through an application process to serve in freshman seminar sections.  They know what it is like to be a freshman and want to help you get through your first semester successfully!  Your peer mentor will be part of your First-Year Seminar course, so you will see him or her every week in class and get text or email reminders about upcoming assignments from him or her.  Not only that, but your peer mentor is a great resource for you outside of class.  Have questions about campus organizations, what’s the best thing to eat in the caf or what professor to take for Calculus?  Ask your peer mentor.  They are here for you!

What is a Shorter University Peer Mentor?

Peer Mentors are a select group of Shorter students who will draw upon their personal experiences, creativity, and academic skills to mentor new students during their adjustment to college. The Peer Mentor will assist with the academic, personal, and social development of these students throughout the fall semester.

Who may become a Peer Mentor?

All rising sophomores, juniors and seniors with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 are encouraged to apply. The required 3.0 GPA will be checked again after spring and summer semesters as well. Successful applicants will demonstrate leadership, initiative, knowledge of campus resources, and a true desire to help others. Peer mentors will be selected based on the information submitted on the application, observed during the interview and on the recommendation of their campus references.

What are the expectations of Peer Mentors?

Peer Mentors are held to a high level of accountability in terms of attitude, reliability, and behavior since they will be mentors and role models for the new students. A positive attitude, the ability to be a team player, and respect for community standards are important prerequisites. Under no circumstances are peer mentors allowed to date first-year students or socialize with first-year students in situations that are inappropriate for our Christian Mission. Peer mentors will work closely with First-Year Seminar faculty and student affairs staff throughout the fall semester.

Specific responsibilities:

  • Mentor a group of approximately 20 – 25 freshmen.
  • Attend all Camp Hawk, Welcome Week and First-Year Seminar events with mentor group, organizing events with group at appropriate times, and facilitating discussions when asked.
  • Help new students set achievable goals and hold them accountable for achieving those goals.
  • Serve as a resource and information source for the group and serve as a role model to new students.
  • Assist freshmen in meeting other upperclassmen who could become role models for them.
  • Attend all peer mentor meetings during the fall, complete coursework for FCS 3000 credit and submit weekly update reports.
  • Work with assigned First-Year Seminar instructor on classroom responsibilities and projects.
