History
Shorter University has a long history as an institution that has distinguished itself in the arts and sciences. Founded as the Cherokee Baptist Female College in 1873 and renamed Shorter College in 1877 to honor benefactors Alfred and Martha Shorter, it remained a women’s college until the 1950s, building a strong reputation for excellence, most particularly in the field of music. Since that time, the school has continued to build upon that liberal arts heritage in science, business, education, and more recently, in providing professional education to adults. On June 1, 2010, Shorter College became Shorter University.
Mission
The Shorter University Online Degree Department is a delivery mechanism for Shorter University’s overall goals of providing a Christ-Centered Critical Thinking atmosphere for students and the community in which we operate. The Online Degree Department is involved in the constant and vigilant search for new prospective students who wish to further not only their education but to grow spiritually in Christ’s love which will allow them to impact their own communities positively. The Online Degree Department’s staff works and develops alongside the Shorter University Admissions staff as we believe we are also called to reflect Christ’s love and service for our students by encouraging and accommodating them as we help bring them into the technological world of online learning.
