Sheryl Crow takes a detour for her latest album Published April 2, 2008, 2:00 a.m. Sheryl Crow is not taking the long way around on her latest album, Detours.
Detours is Sheryl Crow’s only album since Wildflower in 2006. Crow has hard-hitting lyrics that deal with piercing issues like Hurricane Katrina, the price of gasoline, 9/11, and the war in Iraq. Crow is known for expressing her views, most recently with her cross-country trip to promote environmental awareness. Some of the songs like Love Is Free has a serious message that is hidden in upbeat music, perky music. The album has a folk/blues rhythm to most of its songs like Detours. There are also the usual love and break-up songs (Drunk With the Thought of You and Now That You’re Gone) that almost anyone can relate to. Many of the songs on Detours have serious issues that Crow hits head-first. In Make It Go Away, she speaks about her experience dealing with breast cancer. “Lay on the table begging for another chance” clearly expresses the anguish in dealing with the fight to live. Other, less personal songs like God Bless This Mess, touch on political issues and have hard-hitting lyrics (“The President spoke words of comfort with tears in his eyes then he led us as a nation into a war all based on lies”). A song most likely inspired by Crow’s romance(s) is Drunk With the Thought of You that speaks about loving someone romantically (“Well if love is a cocktail of all that you are I get drunk with the thought of you”). Detours is the type of music that I can find myself listening too on a hot summer day driving towards the beach. Even with the intense lyrics, it has a “feel – good” beat to it that anyone can enjoy. Crow covered every area when she made this album; political, personal, and love. She definitely used her freedom of expression and speech through this album to voice her opinion. © 2008 The Periscope Shorter College, Rome GA |
