LC1: RE-WRITING HISTORY

Texting, e-mailing, Facebook posting… indeed, you are a writer. Your personal history as a writer, though, is especially important. The first semester of college is the perfect time to strengthen your writing by focusing on grammar and mechanics. By joining this LC, you will have an opportunity to grow as a writer while tracing your own past and exploring American history as a whole.

LC2: BUILDING A FOUNDATION

Check out I Corinthians 3: 9b-11. Have you ever volunteered with Habitat for Humanity or wanted to actually help build a house? If so, keep reading. Working together with Habitat for Humanity, this LC will build a foundation for success in college, service and our individual Christian walks. In addition to grabbing a hammer, travel to the Habitat for Humanity headquarters is being planned.

LC3: INSIDE THE GAME

Are you curious about the real business of sports? Are you ready to bring your team attitude to the classroom? From the field to the court to the office, the sports industry is a thriving component of many people’s daily lives. The activities and projects of this LC are perfect foundations for potential sports management majors. Off-campus tours, group assignments and service learning opportunities will complete the winning season.

LC4: HIGH HEELS, COWBOY BOOTS & SNEAKERS

Take a walk in someone else’s shoes. Think about it… your faith, family and experiences contribute to who you are and what you believe, yet we seldom take time to reflect on these matters. This LC gives you the opportunity to explore and refine your core beliefs while gaining an appreciation and understanding of the experiences of others. If you expand your experiences, you expand your world.

LC5: SPRINGTIME IN PARIS

Need an excuse to experience Paris? If you are placed in English 1020, you should probably find your suitcase. Through this LC, students will explore the juxtaposition of American and European cultures through literature and art. You will be exposed to the transformational power of international travel and gain an appreciation for studying abroad. This LC includes promoting travel to Paris in May 2011.

LC6: FRANKENSTEIN, HARRY POTTER & FRIENDS

To explore the roles of Gothic and contemporary literature and theatrical adaptations of thriller and horror genres in society, this LC will study classics such as Dracula and The Hunchback of Notre Dame along with Twilight, Harry Potter and Wicked. Also, the application of theatrical special effects makeup will bring some of these monsters to life! If you’re interested in analyzing social monsters and outcasts, join this LC.

LC7: FIRST IMPRESSIONS

If you are the first person in your family to attend college, the transition may appear long, daunting or confusing. Did you know you’re not alone? Shorter has been home to countless first-generation college students before you. Through this LC, you will experience intensive support and acquire campus resources to help you successfully begin your college career. Participation eligibility will be determined during your Summit session.

LC8: FAITH AND FILMS

Numerous films portray Biblical stories from different perspectives; countless more such as Avatar and The Blind Side allude to symbolic representations of the Christian faith. Through this LC, you will consider these films as they impact or reflect your own faith. Students will analyze the theological themes and methods of writing of and on various films. The experience is geared to students considering studies in Shorter’s Honors Program.

LC9: MEDICALLY SPEAKING

Popular television shows have often brought the complexities of medical knowledge to the comforts of your own living room. “House”, “Grey’s Anatomy” and “ER” provide countless Hollywood examples of the real-life relevance for strong communication skills in medical professions. As you aspire to be a science major at Shorter, this LC will combine a significant foundation in biology with a meaningful awareness of how to communicate effectively with those you serve.

LC10: LEGAL IMPACT: BUSINESS MEETS LAW

Who can miss the daily news stories that illustrate how the legal system impacts business in today’s economy? Long before you step foot in a courtroom, potential lawyers should grasp an overview of the business world. Through this LC, you will also explore current events and participate in debates connecting these two crucial areas. The jury has submitted the verdict – this is the LC for you.

LC11: FREAKONOMICS

What do hurricanes, heart attacks and highway deaths have in common? From crime and cheating to sports and child-rearing, join this LC and delve into seemingly random questions and countless life riddles. You will examine how economics, algebra and critical thinking can help make sense of our world, sometimes by just teaching us the right questions to ask. Be ready to discover life applications you never expected. It’s time to be curious!

LC13: SPEAKING OF POLITICS

With the 2010 mid-term elections happening this fall, now is the perfect time to gain an in-depth understanding of the American political system. In this LC, you will apply communication skills to a series of problems and decision-based activities that focus on the development and dynamics of the U.S. government. Of course, special attention will be given to the critical issues of this year’s elections.
