The Office of Student Life offers three leadership programs. Calling All Leaders; Apollos: Real Men Lead; and, Hill Climbers. Apollos and Hill Climbers are offered to freshmen students and have an application process. Calling All Leaders is offered to all students.
Calling All Leaders is a leadership series comprised of six different workshops focusing on different leadership topics and skills that are desirable in student leaders. The series takes place once month and last for approximately 60 minutes in length, including the following topics:
- male-female oriented leadership
- and motivation.
Each session focuses on a different topic presented by a different speaker. Guest speakers from all over the nation come to Shorter University to help train our future leaders of tomorrow in fun and exciting ways. In hopes of having well trained candidates for leadership positions on campus, students need to attend at least three of the sessions to be considered for a leadership position. It’s not only beneficial but imperative that students who desire to become Resident Advisors, Orientation Leaders, Peer Mentors, or Shorter Ambassador members attend the series.
Sessions are held in Austin Moses Room from 6 pm to 7 pm.
The Hill Climbers program is designed to offer first-year students a unique opportunity to develop their leadership potential through a year-long experience. During the program participants meet other new students, experience personal growth, build relationships, and participate in a unique community of student leaders. Participants learn more about involvement at Shorter University and prepare for leadership roles in student organizations and campus departments.
Students selected to participate in Hill Climbers participate in a weekend ropes course retreat, a community service project, and a series of bi-monthly leadership workshops focusing on different leadership topics.
Apollos: Real Men Lead – A Male Leadership Program
With the intention of gathering men of Christ to become better leaders, Apollos is a freshmen leadership program designed to help enhance or bring out the leader in our students. Apollos is a semester long program that meets twice a month centered around hands-on leadership activities. The program provides an atmosphere where our male students can truly learn how to be better male Christian leaders emphasizing such topics as understanding leadership, values, social justice, diversity, and reflection.
These programs are designed to develop leaders on campus who are interested in making a difference in the Shorter University community. Program alums have gone on to have very successful and fulfilling experiences at Shorter and in the years after. Some of their accomplishments include:
- Serving as Presidents of clubs, organizations, and fraternities / sororities.
- Elected into numerous student government and Residence Life positions.
- Leadership program alums have the skills and confidence to take on leadership roles across the Shorter University campus and beyond!
Please note that there is not one type of person or leader who should participate in these leadership programs. A variety of individuals with different life experiences and who are at different levels of their leadership and personal development will benefit from and contribute to the experience. Everyone who is interested is encouraged to apply.
