ACADEMIC ADVISING

Academic advising at Shorter College is designed with the student's success as its goal. The faculty and professional staff of the College are available to aid students in arranging programs of study, but the student is responsible for becoming familiar with and fulfilling all degree requirements.

Every student enrolled in Shorter’s educational program is assigned an academic advisor. Advisors help their advisees select and register for a schedule each semester. In addition, they are available to guide students in clarifying vocational objectives and preparing for careers or further study.

Freshmen in traditional semester programs will be advised by members of the faculty and staff selected for their ability to assist the student making the transition from high school to college. Entering students meet their advisor during SUMMIT, Shorter's summer advising, testing, and registration event. They remain with this advisor through their freshman year.

After the freshman year, students are usually assigned to a faculty advisor within their chosen academic field. In some cases this may be their freshman advisor, but students often change advisors after their first year. Transfer students participate in an early registration event at the beginning of each semester, and they are usually assigned to a major advisor during that time.

Students enrolled in Shorter's accelerated programs are also assigned an advisor upon their entry into the program. Due to the nature of these programs, however, most of the scheduling for courses is mapped out at the beginning of the student's academic career at Shorter. Regularly scheduled meetings between the student and the advisor are usually not necessary.
