Chemistry is one of the most employable college degrees. Nationwide, the youngest B.S. chemists in 2000 earned an average of $38,500 (the average for all chemists was $70,000) and had an unemployment rate of only 2%. We prepare you to enter the job market or go to graduate school by giving you extensive hands-on experience with a wide variety of modern instruments, even in introductory courses. Chemistry Major Requirements (51-52 hrs.)
Bachelor of Arts Degree with a major in Health Science and Counseling This major is a collaborative program of the biology and psychology departments. It is designed to prepare students for entry level employment (e.g. working for crisis centers, AIDS resource and education, or as a patient advocate) or application to graduate/professional school in health oriented fields in which client counseling and education are important components (e.g. genetic counseling, nursing and various allied health programs, public health). This major will also prepare students for graduate programs in cell biology, molecular biology, developmental biology, and genetics. As a liberal arts degree, this program of study combines two years of foreign language (Spanish is recommended) and extra humanities with a strong preparation in biology, chemistry, psychology, and research methods. Such undergraduate training will provide students with the skills, knowledge, sensitivities, and abilities (such as a second language) to prepare them for health professional/graduate programs and to understand an increasingly diverse U.S. population that will need health care in the 21st century.
