The Department of Mathematics offers three majors in mathematics.
These programs are designed to prepare you to teach mathematics at the secondary level, to work in business and industry, or to enter graduate school. We are proud of our excellent record in the placement of graduates in degree-related occupations.

The Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics
This is a traditional mathematics major with a liberal arts emphasis. It consists of 24-30 credit hours in mathematics and 12-18 hours in related courses.
Bachelor of Science in Mathematics
If you are more interested in applying mathematics in science and industry or in pursuing more advanced mathematics degrees, you may want to choose the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. This major consists of 39 specified hours in mathematics, eight credit hours of physics, and six additional credit hours in mathematics or related courses.
Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education
If you want to teach mathematics at the high school level, then you should choose the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education. This major consists of 36 specified credit hours in mathematics, three hours of humanities, and the professional education sequence--including student teaching--which leads to certification. Scholarship opportunities are available through the state of Georgia for university juniors and seniors majoring in math education.

Dr. Richard Cowan has taught at Shorter for the past thirty-two years and in 1992 he won the Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership award. In addition to administrative and teaching responsibilities Dr. Cowan serves as our test center supervisor for the PRAXIS and ACT exams. Dr. Cowan also serves as eligibility chair of the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina conference of which Shorter University is a charter member. |

Dr. Danny Davis has taught at Shorter for the past twenty-five years, and in 1995 he won the Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr. Davis serves as co-chair of the Teaching, Learning, and Technology Roundtable. Also, he is sponsor of Mu Alpha Theta, the Shorter University Math Club. |

Shorter’s Lady Hawks head volleyball coach since 2006, Mr. Moseley joins the faculty as an instructor of math as well. He holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Vanderbilt University. Prior to Shorter, he served at Guntersville High School and Cherokee County High School. |

Swanagan, Dr. Diana

Dr. Swanagan holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in mathematics education from the University of Georgia and a master’s degree in mathematics from Oakland University. Dr. Swanagan has teaching experience as an adjunct math instructor for Athens Technical College and a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Georgia. She was also co-editor of The Mathematics Educator for the Mathematics Education Student Association.
