MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE

The national shortage of people trained in mathematics and computer science is expected to grow in the future. Therefore, our graduates can look forward to a wide variety of career opportunities.

laptopAmong the most rapidly growing professions are:

  • computer science and information processing
  • network administration
  • software engineering
  • Web site design
  • systems analysis
  • security consulting
  • education and training

DEGREE PROGRAMS

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers three majors in mathematics.

These programs are designed to prepare you to teach mathematics at the secondary level, to work in business and industry, or to enter graduate school. We are proud of our excellent record in the placement of graduates in degree-related occupations.

The Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics

This is a traditional mathematics major with a liberal arts emphasis. It consists of 24-30 credit hours in mathematics and 12-18 hours in related courses.

Bachelor of Science in Mathematics

If you are more interested in applying mathematics in science and industry or in pursuing more advanced mathematics degrees, you may want to choose the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. This major consists of 39 specified hours in mathematics, eight credit hours of physics, and six additional credit hours in mathematics or related courses.

Computer Information Systems

The Computer Information Systems major requires a solid foundation grounded modern information system technologies and systems problem solving skill development. Courses in Web site development, database, security, systems analysis and design, as well as resource management are among those required for the CIS major. Other traditional courses, such as networking, operating systems, and programming are also form an integral part of the program.

Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education

If you want to teach mathematics at the high school level, then you should choose the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education. This major consists of 36 specified credit hours in mathematics, three hours of humanities, and the professional education sequence--including student teaching--which leads to certification. Scholarship opportunities are available through the state of Georgia for college juniors and seniors majoring in math education.
