INTERNATIONAL STUDIES MAJOR
The International Studies major at Shorter College is designed to prepare students for international careers and for the global challenges of life in the twenty-first century. As the globe shrinks and cultures collide, the demand for world citizens who can move between nations and across cultures will increase.
These world citizens must possess a knowledge base that will enable them to understand the histories and cultures of various regions of the world. But more importantly, these citizens must have an appreciation for cultural differences and an ability to understand such differences in order to create a better world and to live satisfying and fulfilling lives.

This major allows for considerable flexibility so that students may pursue a more specific career course in a second major or minor area. This flexibility can enhance the marketability of a graduate.
Unlike most other majors, the international studies major draws from across the college curriculum, offering students the opportunity to study in a variety of disciplines.
In addition to completing two introductory international studies courses, this major is organized around five thematic concentrations:
- Culture and Arts
- Global Environments
- History and Governmental Structures
- Worldviews and Belief Systems
- Regional Concentration (Study Abroad component)
Most importantly, the international studies major is designed to move students toward global citizenship.
For example, in the photos above, Dr. Li is lecturing our Global Citizenship class about Confucianism. Dr. Li Yunlou served for many years as the Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages at Zhengzhou University. After his retirement, he accepted the position of Dean of the School of International Studies at Huanghe University, also in Zhengzhou, China. He has written numerous articles and is a well-respected academician.
