    MODEL UN

The Model United Nations provides students with a unique academic experience. Participants step into the role of UN ambassadors to debate current issues on the organization's vast agenda. In the process they gain knowledge of the origins, structure, history, procedures and functioning of the United Nations organization as well as the history, culture and economics of a particular member nation of the UN.

As "Ambassadors" for a Model UN member state participants learn about their country and its positions on important world issues such as peace, security, human rights, globalization, economic development, hunger, and the environment. Then as participants in simulated sessions at Model United Nations conferences in the South East region they plot strategy, negotiate, solve conflicts and navigate the procedural rules of the UN. The positions they take are based on their knowledge and understanding of the needs, goals and foreign policies of the actual nation they represent.

Beginning in the Fall of 2007 participation in the Model UN program earns students three credit hours at Shorter College.

During the Fall 2006 semester, students will participate in the Charleston/Savannah Model United Nations Conference (November 2-4, 2006).
