Office of Financial Aid

Dear Shorter College Students:

In his state budget recommendations, which include financial aid funding for the 2010-11 academic year, Governor Sonny Perdue is recommending elimination of the Georgia Tuition Equalization Grant (TEG). This state program has provided tuition assistance to Georgia citizens attending private colleges in the state since 1975. Elimination of the program would result in the loss of $29 million annually in tuition assistance to Georgia citizens, including the 69 percent of our current students who receive TEG funds.

No doubt, for many of our students, the TEG plays an important part in being able to afford to attend Shorter. We are asking your help in contacting your legislators and, for students, asking your parents/families to do the same. We need to stress the importance of the TEG because it is the only state aid available to all Georgia residents without grade requirements.

Please consider contacting your state legislators via letter or phone. To determine the legislators who represent your hometown, visit http://www.congress.org/congressorg/state/main/?state=GA&view=myofficials#0. The work on the state budget is already underway, and our prompt response is needed.

Thank you for your consideration of this request and best wishes for your continued success.

Sincerely,

Harold E. Newman, Ed.D.
President
