Please Say Thank You to Your state legislatures for your Financial Aid

We would like to encourage our students to thank our state policy makers for the aid they provide to support you in your educational endeavor. With the looming budget cuts, we want to make sure folks hear directly from students regarding just how appreciated every dollar is in making a college education a dream come true.

Handwritten notes are superior, but a little more difficult to organize.
So, for those wanting to use email, we have created an easy web portal for students to use to easily write to their members of the General Assembly.
Go to http://capwiz.com/naicu/ga/home/ to see the "Action Alert" for students.

Important Information Regarding your 2013-2014 FAFSA

The U.S. Department of Education recently created an enhancement to the FAFSA filing process by allowing applicants and parents to retrieve tax data from the IRS.  This new process is called the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. We strongly recommend that parents and students select this option when filing their 2013-2014 FAFSA. This option will streamline and expedite the processing of your financial aid.

Although the FAFSA may be filed any time after January 1st, we suggest you file your FAFSA after February 1st and after you have filed your 2012 federal taxes in order to take advantage of the IRS Retrieval Tool.

What is the IRS Data Retrieval Tool?

>    IRS Data Retrieval tool will allow FAFSA filers to request and retrieve their income and tax data from the IRS

>    Electronically filed tax return information will be available in 1-2 weeks after the return has been filed

>    Data from paper tax returns will be available in 6-8 weeks

What are my next steps?

>    File 2012 federal taxes as soon as possible

>    Wait for the IRS to process your return

>    File 2013/2014 FAFSA after February 1 and use IRS Data Retrieval Tool. Do not select “Will file”

warning signNOTE!

It has come to our attention that some of our students are receiving information from a company encouraging them to apply for aid through them. This company is also asking for a fee. Please know that IT IS FREE to apply for all federal and state financial aid. All you need to do is complete the FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Please disregard this company’s attempt to take your money! Financial aid is awarded by colleges and universities, not private companies.

If in doubt about something you receive, please feel free to call the financial aid office at 706-233-7227 or email us at financialaid@shorter.edu.
