What age students are accepted to Summer Arts Institute?

We are a camp for rising 9th grade students through recently graduated seniors.

What will you be teaching my student?

Our two week comprehensive camp focuses on preparing your student for college auditions and all the things they will encounter as they major in voice, piano, musical theatre, organ, band, or theatre. They will take individual lessons with faculty at Shorter as well as group classes in theory, ear training, stage movement, chorus, handbells and other classes.

What does a general camp day look like?

Our day at a glance has breakfast at 8 a.m. Classes and lessons from 9 a.m - 5 p.m. Free time 5 p.m. - 6 p.m. Dinner at 6 p.m. And then evening activities. While we do provide them free time throughout the day, we always know where your student is. We are always aware of their whereabouts.

What are my students performing opportunities during camp?

Both Saturday's there is a recital where we invite parents, family and friends to watch everyone perform. Whether you student performs is up to the discretion of them and their teacher.

When can we visit our student and take them off campus?

Recitals are the perfect time to visit. The middle Saturday, after the recital, you will have the opportunity to take your student off campus with you for lunch for a couple of hours. Other than this time the students stay with counselors and other campers for the entirety of camp.

How many students do you usually accept?

On average we accept 26 students each year.

Do you travel off campus?

We love to take trips off campus. To see the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, take in a show at Fox theatre, swimming in Cave Springs, Chattanooga, Atlanta and other events around our area. It is our aim to show your student all of the wonderful aspects of the artistic world around our area.

How much does Summer Arts Institute cost?

The cost of the Summer Arts Institute is $1000.

What is covered in my students camp cost?

  • Room
  • Food  
  • Trips on and off campus
  • Any fees incurred during trips
  • Private lessons
  • Group lessons
  • Tshirt and other items throughout the two weeks
  • They will only be required to cover one off campus meal of $15 and any gifts, souvenirs or items purchased when at an off campus event. 

Are there scholarships available?

Yes! The scholarship form is located under the "General Information" section of our website. You must download, print, and mail your form and required materials by May 12, 2013. It is camp policy to only consider scholarship applications once online registration and initial deposit ($250) are received.

Is there a nurse available?

While we do not have a nurse on campus during the summer months, we are directly across the street from and Urgent Care center that is open all day, and half a mile from Floyd Hospital that is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
