    OPERA

from Baby Doe 2010Opera is alive and well at Shorter University! Students have the opportunity to perform in fully staged productions in both the fall and spring semesters.

Shorter Opera Theatre performs a mixture of opera scenes, chamber operas, one-act works, operettas, and full-length operas. When appropriate, the operas are performed in their original language, and feature the use of Supertitles. Selection of the operas is made to showcase student singers and to expose them to the breadth of operatic literature from early music to contemporary, and from verismo opera to operetta.

In addition to leading roles at the undergraduate level and first-class vocal training from the Shorter voice faculty, the opera program includes a class Opera Preparation course.

Shorter Opera Theatre and Shorter Theatre Department are joining forces to bring you The Secret Garden, with music by Lucy Simon, and lyrics and book by Marsha Norman.  The Secret Garden was nominated for a Tony award for Best Musical when it premiered on Broadway in 1991.  A hidden garden is discovered by a young girl named Mary Lennox. Mary has come from India, orphaned, spoiled, sickly, and determined that she will not like living with her uncle, Archibald Craven, who is grieving the loss of his wife. Upon discovering the garden, all experience a great transformation.  This beautiful story of love and hope is ideal for children and adults, and will be performed with full orchestra.
