Tenor, Chuck Chandler, is Assistant Professor of Music (Voice) at Shorter University, and is the director of the Guest Artist Series and New Music Series. He was recently awarded the Vulcan Materials Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award for the 2011-2012 academic year. Chandler is an active member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing where his students continue to win top awards at both the state and regional levels of the NATS voice competition. His students have also been finalists and won awards in other competitions including the Orpheus Vocal Competition and the Lexington Bach Competition; they find frequent summer stock work, and have been offered prestigious teaching assistantships at graduate programs including NYU.

Chuck Chandler

As an active performer throughout the southeast in opera, oratorio, and recitals, Mr. Chandler has made recent appearances with the Rome Symphony Orchestra, Kentucky Opera, Converse Opera Theatre, the Louisville Ballet, the Louisville Philharmonic Orchestra, Chorale II in Atlanta GA, Indiana University Southeast, and the UK Opera Theatre. His international appearances include concerts in Russia, Viet Nam, and a concert tour of Germany and Austria.

Among Chandler’s favorite operatic roles are Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, Gherardo in Gianni Schicchi, King Caspar in Amahl and the Night Visitors, Goro in Madama Butterfly, Lucano in L’incornoazzione di Poppea, Nanki-Poo in The Mikado, and Emperor Altoum in Turandot. One of the highlights of Chandler’s operatic career was an appearance in Kentucky Opera’s production of Samson et Dalilah with international mezzo-soprano, Denyce Graves.

As an avid performer of oratorio and concert repertoire, Mr. Chandler’s credits include Obadiah in Elijah, Uriel in The Creation, the tenor solos in Handel’s Messiah, Puccini’s Gloria, Saint-Saëns’ Christmas Oratorio, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, DuBois’ Seven Last Words of Christ, Stainer’s Crucifixion, and two world premiere performances; one of composer, Jocelyn Hagen’s song cycle for tenor and soprano, “The Time of Singing Has Come”, and the other a concert opera commissioned by the Georgia Music Teachers Association entitled Toowhopera written by Georgia composer, Sorrel Hayes in which Chandler premiered the role of Spamonti.

Chandler received his undergraduate degree in vocal performance from Florida State University, and a Masters in vocal performance from the University of Kentucky where he is currently ABD. Additional studies include private instruction at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the young artist program at Kentucky Opera. Chandler has also received levels one and two certifications in Singing Voice Specialist training which focuses on working with injured voices to improve their singing as part of the recovery process. He is in his clinical fellowship for the third and final stage of certification in Singing Voice Specialist training.

Prior to his arrival at Shorter University, Mr. Chandler taught applied voice at North Greenville University and The Alia Lawson Academy of Music at Converse College, and held a full teaching assistantship at University of Kentucky. Additionally, he has maintained a private voice studio since 2002.
