Dr. Alan B. Wingard is dean of the School of the Arts and professor of music at Shorter where he has taught since 1973. Dr. Wingard received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Alabama where he studied piano with Roy McAllister. In 1973, he received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Southern Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, where he studied piano with Dr. Maurice Hinson.
A specialist in the male changing voice, Dr. Wingard was director of the Rome Boys Club Choir for 14 years. He has written articles, taught workshops, and conducted and adjudicated middle and high school choral festivals in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Washington, and Maryland. Dr. Wingard has had over 30 years of choral teaching experience and has taught and conducted children, youth, adult, and senior adult choirs in the church, school, and the community.
He presently serves as Minister of Music at Garden Lakes Baptist Church in Rome. Dr. Wingard has written articles for the Church Musician, The Hymn, and the Dictionary of American Hymnology. He is a member of the American Choral Director Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and Pi Kappa Lambda.
