Members of Shorter's Epsilon Sigma sorority with Memory Walk banner

September 26 - Members of Shorter's Epsilon Sigma sorority recently raised money for the Alzheimer's Association and participated in the local Memory Walk held on Sept. 22. More than $50,000 has been raised by the Rome community so far. The Ep Sig members from Shorter wanted to walk because many of them have family members with the disease, so the
project was close to their hearts.

Epsilon Sigma selects a different philanthropic cause each month as their service project.
In October, the members plan to participate in Shorter's Up 'Til Dawn fund-raiser
for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Nine students pose for a group photo at Petty John's Cave

September 19 - Members of Melanie Sumner’s creative writing class spent Sunday, Sept. 16, in caving adventures at Petty John’s Cave in Walker County, Ga. The group went on this excursion to bond as a class and feel more comfortable together throughout the semester. One student also explained that the experience provided inspiration and imagery for the students’ writing.

5 girls in pink Phi Mu shirts

September 12 - Phi Mu sisters gather for a photo opportunity during Jurassic Jam, a campus-wide event sponsored by the Inter-Greek Council. The evening served as an opportunity for new and returning students to learn more about Shorter's fraternities and sororities
and enjoy back-to-school fun.

Approximately 105 students held Greek affiliations at the beginning of this semester, and 80 others have shown interest this fall. Greek recruitment continues this week as the sororities host events and socials for the Rush participants. Bid day will take place on Friday, Sept. 14.

Shorter Hawks football player running with the ball

September 5 - The Shorter Hawks opened their 2007 season with a stunning last minute victory over Brevard College. With the game tied at 21-all, kicker Lucas Gonzales nailed a 52-yard field goal with 1.3 seconds left in the fourth quarter. On the following kick-off, Brevard booted the ball and Shorter Hawk Greg Eswine grabbed the live ball and ran 25 yards into the end zone for a touchdown as time expired. The Hawks won 30-21.

The game-winning field goal and his 3-for-3 finish on the day earned Lucas the MidSouth Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

The Hawks return to action Saturday, Sept. 8, at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Ala., in a game starting at 6 p.m. (EDT). The Hawks home opener will be Saturday, Sept. 15, at 1:30 p.m. against LaGrange College.
