Mayterm students in England

Wednesday, May 30 - Participants in Shorter’s MAYTERM program are studying in England and France through June 11. The group, led by music faculty members Dr. Linda Lister and Dr. Sherri Weiler, includes 17 students. Here, a portion of the group is pictured with Parliament in the background.
 
England highlights of the MAYTERM trip include visiting Big Ben, Covent Garden, Westminster Abbey and Parliament, as well as attending eight professional theatre productions in London. The group also attended a service at St. Paul’s Cathedral and traveled to Stratford-upon-Avon and Greenwich. This MAYTERM program also includes a tour of Paris with trips to Versailles, Montmartre, Notre Dame, the Louvre, the Pantheon and the Bastille.

Shorter pitching to opponent's batter

Wednesday, May 23 - Shorter's Lady Hawks Softball Team had quite a memorable season.
For the first time in Shorter history, they competed in the NAIA national softball championship, held May 18-19 in Decatur, Ala
.

Additionally, Lindsey Byers and Terri Lynn Ricks were both named to the 2007 Daktronics - NAIA Scholar Athlete Team for their academic success. Missy Duke, Kerry Hammond and Jessica Sanders were named to the All-Region team, and Lady Hawks Coach Melanie Carter was named Region Coach of the Year and SSAC Coach of the Year.

The Shorter Chorale at a Braves Game

Wednesday, May 16 – Members of the Shorter Chorale posed for a photo before the Atlanta Braves game on May 7. In addition to a little R&R at Turner Field, The Chorale’s 2007 tour included performances at Milford Baptist Church in Marietta, Blairsville Baptist Church, Cherokee High School, Pebblebrook High School and Woodstock High School.

The tour had many Shorter College connections. Students Jacob Craig and Kara Huneycutt are members at Blairsville Baptist, where Fred Lodge – father of Shorter grads Chris, Michael and Jonathan Lodge – is the pastor. The stop at Cherokee High School – Chorale Director Martha Shaw’s other alma mater – included a visit with the school’s choral director, Shorter graduate Brad Ellis. Shorter grad Scott Martin serves as choral director at Woodstock High School. In 2008, the Shorter Chorale will travel to Italy for its tour.

Spring commencement exercises

Wednesday, May 9 – Shorter’s alumni body grew by 370 on Saturday, May 5.
Commencement exercises were held at the Winthrop-King Centre, where
Dr. Jamil Zainaldin, president of the Georgia Humanities Council, spoke at the
10 a.m. ceremony and Mr. David Hankerson, county manager for Cobb County and
member of the Shorter College Board of Visitors, spoke at the 2 p.m. ceremony.

Religion department's ice cream social

Wednesday, May 5 – End of the semester activities included the Religion Department’s ice cream social held recently at the home of department chairman, Dr. Alan Hix. Here, students enjoy Dr.  David Fillingim’s performance of “The Yodeling Theologian Blues.”
