Dr. Harold E. Newman with catcher

April 28 - Shorter President Dr. Harold Newman threw out the first pitch during Shorter College Night at the Rome Braves on Thursday, April 22. The Baptist Collegiate Ministries Band performed prior to game time, and Shorter students participated in the “in between inning” games.

Don’t worry if you missed Dr. Newman’s wind up last week, you’ll still get a chance to see our president send the ball sailing over home plate on June 1 as part of Shorter University Rome Braves Night. The game that pits the Braves against the Augusta Green Jackets is just one of several activities planned to celebrate Shorter’s transition to university status. For tickets to the game, visit www.romebraves.com or call 706-378-5144.

6 guys playing tug of war

April 21 - Shorter students celebrated Greek Week recently with a schedule full of fun activities. Students participated in game day on the Front Circle and competed in events like the sponge relay, water balloon toss and tug-o-war. Greek Week’s “Coins for Christ” penny fundraiser brought in  more than $1,500 for the Rome-Floyd County Youth for Christ Program. The amount of pennies and spare changed collected was enough to send seven local children to Youth for Christ summer camp.

Shorter Greeks also gave faculty and staff a hearty “thank you” by treating them to a free luncheon. Shorter’s Greek community is made of up three fraternities -- Chi Phi, Delta Sigma Phi, Pi Kappa Phi, and three sororities -- Epsilon Sigma, Phi Mu, and Zeta Tau Alpha.

Group shot of the cheerleading squad with national championship trophy

April 13 - The firsts continue to roll in for Shorter College's cheerleading program.

On Friday night, the Hawks' All-Girl squad made it back-to-back national championships by taking first place in the All-Girl II Intermediate division at the 2010 NCA Cheerleading Nationals in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The squad, which captured the school's first-ever team national championship in last year's NCA Nationals, entered Friday's finals as the No. 1 seed after Thursday's preliminary round and did not disappoint, becoming the first Shorter team to win consecutive national championships.

Haley Smith presents

April 8 - Wednesday was a time of celebration on the Hill for students, faculty and staff members.

The college's annual Celebrate Shorter event highlighted the impressive academic achievements of Shorter students. More than 50 student presentations were made during the all-day event and dozens of students received prestigious awards.

In the photo above, senior Haley Smith presents "Hope for Haiti: A Senior Communications Capstone Service-Learning Project." Haley organized a 5K run/walk that benefited the earthquake-ravaged country of Haiti. Her project raised more than $3,000 for Haiti. Haley said of her project: “I didn’t know a thing about 5K races, I’ve not even been in one, but when God puts something on your heart you have to do it. It doesn’t matter if you think you are the least qualified person to pull it off, God will work through you and you’ll be successful.”
