April 28 - Shorter President Dr. Harold Newman threw out the first pitch during Shorter College Night at the Rome Braves on Thursday, April 22. The Baptist Collegiate Ministries Band performed prior to game time, and Shorter students participated in the “in between inning” games. Don’t worry if you missed Dr. Newman’s wind up last week, you’ll still get a chance to see our president send the ball sailing over home plate on June 1 as part of Shorter University Rome Braves Night. The game that pits the Braves against the Augusta Green Jackets is just one of several activities planned to celebrate Shorter’s transition to university status. For tickets to the game, visit www.romebraves.com or call 706-378-5144. Photo courtesy of the Rome Braves
April 13 - The firsts continue to roll in for Shorter College's cheerleading program. On Friday night, the Hawks' All-Girl squad made it back-to-back national championships by taking first place in the All-Girl II Intermediate division at the 2010 NCA Cheerleading Nationals in Daytona Beach, Fla. The squad, which captured the school's first-ever team national championship in last year's NCA Nationals, entered Friday's finals as the No. 1 seed after Thursday's preliminary round and did not disappoint, becoming the first Shorter team to win consecutive national championships. In the photo above, senior Haley Smith presents "Hope for Haiti: A Senior Communications Capstone Service-Learning Project." Haley organized a 5K run/walk that benefited the earthquake-ravaged country of Haiti. Her project raised more than $3,000 for Haiti. Haley said of her project: “I didn’t know a thing about 5K races, I’ve not even been in one, but when God puts something on your heart you have to do it. It doesn’t matter if you think you are the least qualified person to pull it off, God will work through you and you’ll be successful.” Photo by Aimee Madden, public relations specialist See a full slideshow of photos from Celebrate Shorter
