Shorter’s pre-nursing students are already putting their care-giving into action.

September 30 - Shorter’s pre-nursing students are already putting their care-giving into action.

Students Kim Sullins (left) and Brittny Brown took the lead in planning a recent campus service project, in which students who plan to major in nursing at Shorter worked to prepare “Flu Care Bags” for students who may develop flu symptoms. The bags contain items such as bottled water, sports drink, disposable thermometers and even the classic cure-all chicken noodle soup. The bags will be distributed by Shorter’s Director of Student Health Services Mary Shotwell Smith as she encounters flu cases.

Nurse Mary is encouraging the campus community members to be vigilant in handwashing and other preventative measures. For additional information on flu prevention and symptoms, visit http://www.shorter.edu/student_life/flu_prevention.htm.

Shorter Marching Band

September 23 - The Shorter Hawks Marching Band proudly sported new Shorter Blue uniforms at the Sept. 12 match up between Shorter and LaGrange College. The band brought energy and enthusiasm to the heated contest.

In only its third year of existence, the Shorter band is now led by Dr. Andrea Strauss. For 16 years, Dr. Strauss served as the associate director and director of bands at the Georgia Institute of Technology. In addition to sustaining a career in public school teaching, Dr. Strauss served as the associate director of the Atlanta Olympic Band. Significant performances included the closing ceremonies for the 1996 Olympic Games held in Atlanta; the Inaugural Parade for President Bill Clinton in Washington, D.C. and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.

September 16 - Epsilon Sigma members were an island of green amid the sea of Shorter blue on Saturday, Sept. 12, as they watched the Hawks rout the LaGrange College Panthers, 42-19. Barron Stadium was alive with Shorter spirit as the home side was filled to near capacity by students, parents, faculty, staff and community members. The day marked the home opener for the Hawks 2009 season and the debut of a new look for the Shorter Hawks Marching Band.
