DECEMBER 2009
December 16 - Graduate Karissa Stewart pulled double duty during Saturday’s commencement exercises. In addition to receiving the Bachelor of Arts degree, the Calhoun native also covered the ceremony for the Rome News-Tribune. Karissa, who has served as education reporter for the Rome News, is now a member of the staff at The Calhoun Times; both newspapers are owned by the same company.
Karissa was one of more than 500 graduates who received their degrees during the two ceremonies. Building on a quote from Shorter College benefactor Alfred Shorter, the featured speaker, Major General Douglas L. Carver, urged the graduates to serve humanity and to honor God with their lives. Carver, a Rome native, serves as Chief of Chaplains for the United States Army, a post that the Baptist Press has likened to pastoring a mega-church with that church including the entire U.S. Army.

December 9 - Who says final exams have to be all stress and no fun? Here, students enrolled in MUS 2400: History of Musical Theatre I pose for a quick photo before the final begins. The students, dressed like assorted characters from The Lord of the Rings, pose with their instructor, Dr. Matthew Hoch, assistant professor of music.
Students finished finals on Tuesday with attention now focusing on Saturday’s commencement exercises. U.S. Army Major General and Chief of Chaplains Douglas L. Carver will be the keynote speaker at Shorter College’s Dec. 12 commencement ceremonies. Commencement will be held at 10 a.m. and at 2 p.m. in the college’s Winthrop-King Centre. The Rome native is the first Southern Baptist to serve as Chief of Chaplains for the Army.
