AUGUST 2009
August 26 - The Class of 2013 already made history as the largest incoming freshman class in Shorter’s history. And on Saturday, Aug. 22, the students earned another distinction as 240 of the 350 new students volunteered at 23 locations around Rome during the first annual H3: Hawks Helping Humanity. Pictured above is the group that sang at Riverside Retirement Home during the H3 event. Led by senior Justin Maxey, the group of approximately 30 freshmen sang hymns, classical pieces, contemporary Christian songs and gospel classics via solos, small ensembles and group hymn presentations. The majority of the students taking part plan to be music or musical theatre majors at Shorter. Residents enthusiastically invited the group to come back and perform again. August 20 - This smiling group of Shorter College freshmen took a quick time out to pose for a photo during a Soar into Shorter scavenger hunt. The scavenger hunt was just one of the many activities planned during freshmen orientation week by the Office of Student Activities. The hunt, designed to help students find their way around campus, had a hi-tech twist, as students were given their clues via text messaging. The first day of class is Monday, Aug. 24.
August 12 - Shorter College Board of Trustees Chairman Dr. Nelson Price, along with Shorter College Athletic Director Bill Peterson, The Benjamin F. Brady Charitable Foundation President Phill Bettis and Shorter College President Dr. Harold Newman took part Monday in the official groundbreaking ceremony for Shorter’s new and improved Ben Brady Field. The regulation-size artificial turf field will be used for many purposes including athletics and marching band. The field, scheduled for completion in the fall, is located behind the college’s Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex and near the Bass Village student residences. A crowd of more than 50 participated in the groundbreaking ceremony Monday morning. Photo by Aimee Madden, public relations specialist
Aug. 5 - Shorter athletes return to campus today for physicals and will soon begin fall practice. Among their number are 28 athletes and eight coaches who recently traveled to the Two Moose Camp Gainey Ranch in Glen, Montana, where they were the guests of businessman Harvey Gainey.
