APRIL 2009

April 29 - Students in English professor George Thomason’s modern poetry class were treated to a special tea party on Tuesday morning. The tea, complete with homemade scones and other tasty English-inspired treats, was prepared by Janet Morris, the wife of history professor Dr. Terry Morris. Mrs. Morris audited Mr. Thomason’s class and hosted the tea to honor Mr. Thomason’s retirement from Shorter in July. He began teaching at Shorter in 2003 and later became chair of the English and foreign language department.

April 23 - Prisoner 52071019 has some advice he’d like to share. The convicted white-collar criminal had his chance when he, also known as Walt Pavlo, became the first speaker in the Hopkins Institute for Business Ethics Lectureship Series at Shorter College.
Pavlo, author of Stolen Without a Gun, spent time in prison for his involvement in fraud at MCI. His speaker’s bio describes his message as “a cautionary tale for those faced with ethical decisions in the workplace.” The lectureship is funded by the Hopkins Institute for Business Ethics, established in the fall of 2008 thanks to a generous gift from a Shorter College trustee and his wife. Col. and Mrs. Harvard Hopkins pledged $200,000 toward the establishment of the Hopkins Institute, which is housed in the college’s School of Business Administration.

April 9 - The Shorter College community gathered for a sunrise prayer service this morning in the front circle. The event, led by Dr. Nelson Price, chairman of the college’s Board of Trustees, provided a time for faculty, staff and students to reflect on God’s blessings both to them as individuals and to the college as a whole.
“This prayer service was a significant time of reflection during Holy Week as we approach Easter and the celebration of the Resurrection of our Risen Lord,” said Dr. Harold E. Newman, Shorter College president. “The Shorter family came together to pray for our college community and for one another and to express our gratitude for the blessings God has so graciously bestowed.”
Participants were provided with a prayer guide outlining the ACTS of prayer, which include Acclaim (for God), Confession, Thanksgiving and Supplication.
