OCTOBER 2008

Running back A.J. Cooley breaks through for a run.

October 29 - During the Hawks’ October 23 battle against Union College, A.J. Cooley (No. 7) became the first Shorter College football player to amass 1,000 rushing yards in a season. Cooley ran for 122 yards and three touchdowns on the day with 30 carries.

In addition, Cooley was named the Mid-South Player of the Week for Oct. 6-12 and went on to earn another spot in the Hawks’ history book as he was named NAIA National Football Offensive Player of the Week for that same period. This was the first such award for the young football team. “This should be a team award,” Cooley said. “I couldn’t do this without the guys making big blocks for me. We’ve really worked well together all season.”

Melonie Hardy and Will Cates

October 22 - Though the last official presidential debate took place well over a
week ago, there’s still one more left on the agenda.

Senators Barack Obama and John McCain will host a debate at Shorter College
next week. Granted, the debate won’t feature the actual presidential candidates,
but the issues dished out Tuesday will be as real as they come.

Shorter freshman Melonie Hardy will play the part of Arizona senator and presidential
republican candidate John McCain. Sophomore Will Cates will portray democratic
presidential candidate and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama. Both are students currently enrolled
in Dr. Chuck Wynn’s American government class.

Alumni baseball players cheering

October 1 - Shorter alumni cheer on their teammates at the 2008 Homecoming Game...the Alumni Baseball Homecoming Game, that is. Thirty former Hawks suited up to play in the morning game; they represented classes from the 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s. Shorter Head Baseball Coach Matt Larry (’93) described the event as “awesome.”

That’s a word that could be repeated for many activities during Homecoming Weekend, which was held Sept. 26-28. Highlights of the weekend included a kid-friendly carnival, the Hall of Fame induction ceremony, the third-annual Hawk Hustle 5-K, the Shorter Hawks football team’s 42-0 victory over Faulkner University, and an alumni worship service featuring former Shorter College President Dr. Larry McSwain.
