Shorter students and staff cleaning up after tornado

March 27 - More than a dozen Shorter College students volunteered to clear debris on property along Floyd County's Wax Road after a tornado struck the area on Saturday, March 15. The Shorter team aided in clean-up efforts on March 18, March 20 and March 21.

Students on a study abroad trip in Israel

March 18 - While the campus was on Spring Break last week, a group of 15 students traveled through the Holy Land with professors Dr. Robert Wallace and Dr. Chuck Pearson. The study-abroad trip included visits to dozens of sites of historical and biblical significance.

Other organized Spring Break activities include two mission trips.

  • Campus Minister David Roland and Dr. Alan Hix, assistant professor of religion, are leading a group of Shorter College students to Western Canada, where they will build relationships with area youth, participate in prayer walks and take part in activities at a local college.
  • Dr. John Head, vice president of enrollment management, and Whitney Moseley, student life coordinator, are leading a team of students that will volunteer with rebuilding efforts from damage caused by Hurricane Katrina.

Montagious Brown going over the high jump bar

March 12 - Freshman Montagious Brown soared to a national championship in high jump at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' Indoor National Championship at East Tennessee State University on March 7. The Union City, Ga., native led competitors from across the nation with his 6' 10.75" jump.

Brown, who also was named to the All-Freshman team for his performance with Shorter's men's basketball team, left immediately after taking the national title to take part in the Final Four game of the Southern States Athletic Conference basketball tournament.

Students at the Health Fair

March 5 - Shorter students, faculty and staff took advantage of many health assessments, screenings and suggestions from members of the local health care community during the college's annual Health Fair held March 4.

Community health providers at the fair included the American Red Cross, the AIDS Alliance of Northwest Georgia, Blue Ridge Health Education Center, Celebrate Recovery, Club Fitness, Floyd Medical Center Occupational Health, Floyd Medical Center Family Practice, Northwest Georgia Public Health, Redmond Regional Occupational Health, Spencer Family Chiropractic and Weight Watchers.

Participants also received free assessments for body mass index,
vital signs, hemoglobin levels and blood sugar testing.
