JULY 2008

July 30 - Congressman Phil Gingrey, decked out in a Shorter Hawks uniform, helped the GOP to an 11-10 win in the 47th annual charity Congressional Baseball Game. This year’s match-up, one of the closest in recent Congressional history, pitted Republican and Democrat members of Congress against one another in the new Nationals Park, home of the Washington Nationals. The Republicans took home the coveted Roll Call Trophy for the eighth consecutive year.
The lead went back and forth early, with the score at four each as Republicans came to bat in the bottom of the sixth. Rep. Gingrey stepped in as a pinch hitter and reached first base on a fielder’s choice to keep the rally alive. His run would eventually score as the Republicans tacked on four runs in the sixth to take a large lead into the seventh and final inning. The Democrats battled back in the seventh, scoring six runs, but could not pull out the victory.

July 23 - The countdown to Dec. 20 continues... Shorter College Athletic Director Bill Peterson, left, welcomed NAIA Director of Championship Services Dennis Green to Rome during the National Football Championship site visit on July 22. Also viewing the progress was Mike Feminis, NAIA Coaches Association president and St. Xavier head football coach, seen in red.
Green and Feminis arrived for the site visit on July 21 and toured Barron Stadium on July 22. They were "pleasantly surprised" with the addition of new coaches boxes, a renovated press box and the re-graded and re-sodded field. “The people of Rome and Shorter College have done everything that needs to be done to make this a first class event,” Coach Feminis told a Rome News-Tribune reporter.
“It would be a huge understatement if I just said I’m pleased,” added Green.
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ 2008 and 2009 National Championship games were awarded to Shorter College and Rome-Floyd County earlier this year. The 2008 title game will be played at Barron Stadium in Rome on Dec. 20.
