Sheffield-Thompson building at night with snow on the front lawn

January 23 - Late afternoon snow showers on Wednesday, January 16, briefly turned the Rome campus into a winter wonderland. The photo above shows the Sheffield-Thompson Building and front circle area covered by a light snow.

The temperature rose overnight, canceling any hopes of a day out of class on Thursday.

5 students playing Monopoly

January 16 - The Monopoly board game is sold in 103 countries, produced in
37 languages, and -- as illustrated last week in Shorter's School of Business Administration -- is a useful tool in reviewing accounting principles.

To kick-start the spring semester, professors used the board game as a review of concepts and practices that would be needed in the Principles of Managerial Accounting course. Students kept a log of purchases and sales made during the game. Later, they created financial statements to connect their Monopoly play to fundamental accounting concepts.

Tom Smith directing the Shorter band

January 9 - Shorter College Band Director Tom Smith will receive the International Jazz Ambassador award on Saturday, Jan. 12, during the 35th annual International Association of Jazz Education (IAJE) conference. Founded in 1968 as the National Association of Jazz Educators, IAJE promotes the continued worldwide growth and development of jazz and jazz education; the association currently has more than 8,000 members from 42 countries. Only six awards are presented to outstanding jazz leaders each year.

The International Jazz Ambassador award honors an IAJE member who has made a significant impact by developing an IAJE presence in a new and/or underdeveloped country, region or unit. Smith has done all three by beginning more than 30 nonprofit regional jazz ensembles in rural North Carolina, developing a jazz school in Romania and leading a jazz program in African townships.

“I am grateful to be honored with this award because it brings legitimacy to this type of jazz advocacy work,” said Smith.

A five-time Senior Fulbright Professor of Music at the Romanian National University of Music in Bucharest and the Tibiscus University in Timisoara, Smith has also served as a Fulbright Professional Specialist at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa. He holds degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He is pictured above conducting the Shorter College Band in its debut performance at the Sept. 15 Shorter Hawks football game at Barron Stadium.

Bill Peterson taking questions from the media

January 3 - Shorter College Athletic Director Bill Peterson fields questions during this morning's news conference announcing that Shorter's bid to host the NAIA National Football Championship Games in 2008 and 2009 has been successful. Mr. Peterson and Shorter College President Dr. Harold Newman shared the news with a group of media, community supporters and college staff members gathered.

The 2008 game, which will determine the winner of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics national title, will be played on Dec. 20 at Barron Stadium in Rome, home of the Shorter Hawks. The 2009 game is slated for Dec. 19 and will also be held in Rome.

In early 2007, Coach Peterson and head football coach Phil Jones began the process of submitting a formal bid to the NAIA to host the tournament. They formed a partnership with the city of Rome and Floyd County and recruited other community organizations to assist with hosting the event. The selection process included a site visit during the summer of 2007 by an NAIA representative.
