Faculty and staff serving students at Midnight Breakfast

November 30, 2011 - Shorter University students were treated to Midnight Breakfast on Monday, Nov. 28.

As a Shorter event that can be traced back several decades, Midnight Breakfast became a bona fide hilltop tradition during the early to mid 1990s.

In the photo above, Dr. John Connell, chair of the Christian Studies Department, Tracy Batchelor, assistant director of Student Engagement and Success, and Shorter University Provost Dr. Craig Shull, fill students’ plates with traditional breakfast fare.

Timed to coincide with finals week, Midnight Breakfast is served to students by faculty and staff members in hopes that service with a smile (plus a little extra protein) will boost performance on final exams.

Ever wonder how much food is served? According to Aramark Food Services, last year’s breakfast included 60 pounds of bacon, 20 pounds of sausage links, 30 pounds of sausage patties, 40 pounds of eggs, 10 pounds of grits, 360 biscuits, five gallons of gravy, 30 pounds of butter, 40 pounds of pancake mix, five gallons of syrup, 100 waffles and eight boxes of hash browns.

Shayla Raines smiles at a child in a Bulgarian orphanage.

June 29, 2011 - Shorter University nursing student Shayla Raines smiles as she plays with a child living inside a Bulgarian orphanage. School of Nursing students spent the month of June caring for orphaned and disabled children in Bulgaria and working in an urban hospital and rural health clinic in London. The students’ experience in Europe was part of Shorter University’s global study and health care mission, a required component of the Bachelor of Science Nursing degree.

Shayla, a senior from Warner Robins, Ga., had this to say about her time spent in the orphanage: “There were so many memorable moments that make me smile. The one that I think of the most happened on our first couple of days at the orphanage. There was a little boy that was in a little crib. I grabbed a little squishy ball and threw it to him. The first day he would just look at me but the next day he actually began to throw it back. And then the kicker came when he began to smile and giggle. The nurses informed me that that was the most interactive he had been. What a feeling to know that I had helped bring a smile to his face.”

The scholar-practitioner model focuses on lessons that are applicable in a workplace setting. The first cohort began classes in Gwinnett in August 1995 at the Gwinnett Civic and Cultural Center. Those classes moved to the previous location in Lawrenceville in August 1996. The new campus provides 21,895 square feet of space for the 432 students who are currently enrolled at the Gwinnett campus.

The group took time out of their busy schedule and posed for a quick snapshot in the Bicentennial State Mall Park with the Tennessee state capitol in the background (shown above).
