April 26, 2011 – Approximately 300 alumni and friends of Shorter gathered at the Winthrop-King Centre on Tuesday, April 26, for a retirement celebration honoring Shorter University President Dr. Harold E. Newman. Representatives of the Rome community, local government, the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce, Shorter alumni, faculty and staff, and the Shorter University Board of Trustees took part in the program, heralding Dr. Newman’s contributions during his 26 years at Shorter including the six he served as president. As Rome attorney Bob Berry said, “We are retiring the mascot of Shorter University. You are the face and the spirit of this institution.” Dr. Nelson Price, chairman of the Board of Trustees, presented Dr. Newman with a crystal sphere trophy, which represents the influence Dr. Newman has had during his time at Shorter.
