2009 was "The Year of the Hawk - 12/29/09
December 29 - Most collegiate athletic departments tend to measure their success by accomplishments of their athletic teams solely on the playing surface. For Shorter College in 2009, success was achieved not only between the lines, but outside of them as well.

A.J. Cooley Named Shorter's First AFCA All-American - 12/17/09
December 17 - As if there existed any doubt at all, Shorter College senior fullback A.J. Cooley has firmly established his position as the greatest player to ever don the Hawk royal blue and white. On Thursday, Dec. 17, Cooley was named to the 2009 American Football Coaches' Association NAIA All-America Team as voted upon by coaches from each of the AFCA's nine districts.

Students, faculty member place in International Photo Contest - 12/07/09
December 7 - Shorter College’s Office of International Programs recently hosted an International Photo Contest for students, faculty and staff members. The contest was just one of many activities offered in conjunction with International Education Week.

Baseball Hawks Lend a Helping Hand in Dominican Republic - 12/04/09
December 4 - Members of the Shorter College baseball team got a good look at how fortunate they are to be in such a great situation here on the Hill. On Nov. 17-21, seven Hawks took part in the Dominican Republic Baseball Outreach Missions Trip.

US Army Major General and Rome native to speak at Shorter College commencement ceremonies - 12/04/09
December 4 - United States Army Major General and Chief of Chaplains Douglas L. Carver will be the keynote speaker at Shorter College’s Dec. 12 commencement ceremonies. Commencement will be held at 10 a.m. and at 2 p.m. in the college’s Winthrop-King Centre.

Mudy wins NAIA Cross Country National Championship - 11/23/09
November 23 - Justyna Mudy, a sophomore from Poland, added to her already impressive resume by capturing the medalist honors at the 2009 NAIA Cross Country National Championships presented by Nike at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site in Vancouver, Wash.

Shorter College art exhibit featuring the work of student Karlee Hicks - 11/23/09
November 23 - A senior art exhibition featuring the works of Shorter College student Karlee Hicks will open on Dec. 1. Hicks, an art major from Rome, will have her collection of works titled “A Volitional State of Mind Transmitted Telepathically” displayed in the college’s Arnold Gallery until Dec. 14. An opening reception will be held Dec. 1 from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Cooley and Lollis Repeat as Mid-South West Defensive and Offensive Players of the Year - 11/19/09
While they may have come a couple of plays short of ending their on-field careers at the top, Shorter College football seniors A.J. Cooley and Logan Lollis each capped their Hawk tenure with a very prestigious distinction: two-time Mid-South West Player of the Year.

November 19 - Shorter College students Emily Tweedy and Laura Collins swept the recent Georgia Music Teachers’ Association Young Artist Voice Competition by winning first and second place, respectively.

Mudy, Stephenson Earn Runner and Coach of the Year - 11/13/09
November 13 - Sophomore Justyna Mudy earned her second consecutive Southern States Athletic Conference Runner of the Year award and Lady Hawk head coach Jay Stephenson was named the SSAC Coach of the Year to headline Shorter's four representatives on the 2009 SSAC All-Conference Team.

Hawks and Lady Hawks Soccer Place Ten on All-SSAC Team; Stihler Named SSAC Defensive Player of the Year - 11/13/09
November 13 - Shorter College junior defenseman Sebastian Stihler earned Southern States Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year honors in addition to his SSAC first team selection to lead seven Hawks on the All-Conference teams.

Five Lady Hawks Named to All-SSAC Volleyball Team; Corder Pegged Setter of the Year - 11/13/09
November 13 - The Shorter College volleyball team placed five players on the All-Southern States Athletic Conference teams. Highlighting the group was freshman Jordan Corder, who in addition to being named one of three Lady Hawks to the All-SSAC first team was also named the SSAC Setter of the Year.

Shorter College Theatre Department to present “Still Life with Iris” - 11/12/09
November 12 - The Shorter College Theatre Department is excited to debut its fall play, Still Life with Iris. Opening on Nov. 18 the play is a fantastical adventure of a little girl’s search for home.The play will be performed Nov. 18-21 at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. in the Callaway Theatre.

Shorter Chorale Fall Concert planned for November 14 - 11/12/09
November 12 - The Shorter Chorale, widely regarded as one of America’s finest collegiate choral ensembles, will perform a concert on Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. The concert, titled: “Longing: In Anticipation of Things Yet to Come,” will be held at Brookes Chapel inside the Cooper Fine Arts Building located on the Shorter College campus. The event is open to the public.

Shorter College offering free admission to Saturday’s game with a donation of five or more canned goods - 11/12/09
November 12 - Shorter College is offering free admission to Saturday’s match up between the Shorter Hawks and the Bethel Wildcats at Barron Stadium with the donation of five or more canned food items.

Baseball Hawks participate in Rome community service events - 11/12/09
November 12 - This year, the Shorter College baseball team took the time out of its busy schedule to participate in Garden Lakes Elementary National Red Ribbon Week. This special event was held in honor of Enrique Camarena, a D.E.A. agent who lost his life in his fight against drugs.

November 9 - Cooley, the Hawks' all-time leading rusher and holder of every conceivable rushing record at Shorter, has been named the NAIA Football National Offensive Player of the Week as announced Monday afternoon by the NAIA offices in Kansas City, Mo.

November 9 - Shorter College senior middle blocker Kasi Runion has been named the Southern States Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week as announced by the conference offices Monday evening.

Cooley named Mid-South Offensive Player of the Week - 11/09/09
November 9 - Shorter College senior fullback A.J. Cooley has been named the Mid-South Conference Offensive Player of the Week as announced by the league offices Monday afternoon. It is the second such honor for Cooley in three weeks.

Shorter announces the addition of varsity wrestling - 11/09/09
November 9 - Shorter College President Dr. Harold E. Newman and Director of Athletics Bill Peterson announced Monday plans to begin an intercollegiate wrestling program. The team will begin competition in the Fall of 2010.

Shorter College theatre students find success at Georgia Theatre Conference - 11/05/09
November 5 - Two Shorter students, Michael Lindsey of Madison and Elizabeth Telford of Duluth, were honored at the conference for receiving the highest scores during competition. This is the second consecutive year that Shorter has brought home both the male and female top awards.

Shorter College students receive $1,000 scholarship - 11/05/09
Students Justin Maxey, an organ performance major from Winder, and Thomas Williams, a piano performance major from Temple, were both awarded with the maximum amount of scholarship money offered by the Mu Phi Epsilon chapter.

November 2 - Shorter College sophomore goalkeeper Johnny Paletar has been named the Southern States Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the league offices on Monday afternoon.

October 28 - Yesterday morning, members of the Shorter College women's basketball team took a visit to Elm Elementary in West Rome as part of the school's Red Ribbon Week.

Cooley earns Mid-South Player of the Week honor - 10/26/09
October 26 - Senior fullback A.J. Cooley has been named the Mid-South Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Cooley, Shorter's all-time leading rusher, rushed for 206 yards and three touchdowns on a school-record 40 carries to lead the Hawks to an impressive 56-41 victory at Union (Ky.) College on Oct. 24.

Shorter Announces Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2009 - 10/21/09
Shorter College announced today its Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2009, which includes eight individuals who competed in a total of six sports on the Hill.

Shorter College hosting ribbon cutting ceremony for new turf field - 10/21/09
October 21 - Shorter College will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the official opening of the Ben Brady Field at 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 26. The ceremony will be held at the field, located behind the college’s Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex and near the Bass Village student residences.

Shorter College hosts “Ghana Day” for Floyd students - 10/21/09
October 21 - Dozens of first and second graders from the Floyd County School System were taken on a field trip to Ghana today by way of Shorter College.

Shorter College honors alumni during Homecoming weekend - 10/20/09
October 20 - Three Shorter College alumni were honored during Shorter College’s Homecoming football game on Saturday, Oct. 17. Those honored included 1985 graduate Dr. Derek Neal, 1998 graduate Michelle Stricklin and 1971 graduate Warren Kennedy.

Student artwork on display at Shorter College - 10/20/09
October 20 - Art majors from freshmen to seniors have entered their best creations to be displayed for everyone to see in the Shorter College Student Art Exhibit. The student exhibit will be on display until Nov. 6, and a reception for all student artists featured in the exhibit will be held on Oct. 26.

Shorter College crowns Homecoming king, queen - 10/17/09
October 17 - Shorter College seniors Ward Bearden and Brittni Dekle were crowned Homecoming queen and king during Shorter’s Homecoming football game on Saturday. Bearden, is a Christian ministries major from Marietta and Dekle is an art major from Woodstock.

October 14 - Shorter College will celebrate its Homecoming this weekend with two days full of scheduled events for alumni. Many of the activities are also open to the public, including the Saturday afternoon gridiron clash between the Hawks vs. Kentucky Christian and the Treasure Chest raffle drawing worth more than $6,000.

Women's golf captures Chick-fil-A Invitational Title - 10/06/09
October 6 - Shorter College freshman Greta Lange finished third overall with a two-day total of 154 and Petra Muller and Catalina Olarte tied for sixth as the Lady Hawks won the Chick-fil-A Collegiate Invitational hosted by Berry College at Stonebridge Golf Club.

Shorter College sophomore Laura Banks receives UPS scholarship - 10/05/09
October 5 - Laura Banks, a sophomore at Shorter College, has been selected to receive a UPS Scholarship. Banks is the daughter of Mike and Karen Banks of Manchester, Ga., and a 2008 graduate of Manchester High School. She is majoring in biology, and plays for the Shorter College Hawks softball and basketball teams.

Lollis named Mid-South Defensive Player of the Week - 09/14/09
September 14 - Shorter College senior linebacker Logan Lollis has been voted the Mid-South Conference Defensive Player of the Week.This is the third Defensive Player of the Week honor for Lollis, the reigning Mid-South Western Division Defensive Player of the Year who also earned the weekly award once each in 2008 and 2006.

September 1 - Shorter College will test its emergency warning siren on Wednesday, Sept. 2, at approximately 11:55 a.m. This is the beginning of monthly testing, which will be held on the first Wednesday of each month. In the event of inclement weather, the monthly test will be moved to the first Thursday of the month.

Shorter College’s Arnold Gallery hosts exhibit of composite photographs - 09/01/09
September 1 - The Arnold Gallery at Shorter College is hosting an exhibit of composite photographs by David Underwood, chair of the art department at Carson-Newman College. The exhibit continues through Sept. 17 and is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no charge for admission.

Shorter College hosting faculty gala at historic DeSoto - 08/25/09
August 25 - Shorter College’s music department will host its annual Faculty Arts Gala on Monday, Aug. 31, at 7:30 p.m., at Rome’s Historic DeSoto Theatre, 530 Broad St. The gala will showcase the vocal and keyboard talents of music faculty and is designed to be a community event.

Nursing scholarship established for Shorter College students - 08/19/09
August 19 - The Hospital Auxiliary at Floyd Medical Center has established a scholarship fund for Shorter College nursing students. The Barbara Holden Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to one Shorter College nursing student on the basis of academic performance and financial need.

Shorter College School of Nursing to host open house - 08/13/09
August 13 - Shorter College will have the chance to showcase one of its latest achievements, as its School of Nursing will host an open house on Aug. 25, from 3 until 6 p.m. Located at 20 Riverbend Drive in the Coosa Medical Group building, the open house will allow the public to tour the new facility and meet faculty and staff.

June 10 - Shorter College alumni and members of the local community have a chance to own a small piece of the college’s history. Starting July 1, Shorter’s Office of Institutional Advancement will be selling old student mailboxes that were left behind with the recent renovation of the college post office.

In the CoSIDA ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Baseball and Softball teams announced today, Shorter College baseball outfielder Jake Broome has been named to the District 3 College Division First Team, while softball pitcher Becca Thomas has been named to the District 3 College Division Second Team. These are the first two Shorter College athletes that have received this recognition from their respective sport.

Shorter Soccer Player Tamar Watson Injured in One-vehicle Accident - 01/05/09
January 5 - Shorter College is saddened to report that student Tamar Watson was injured in a one-vehicle accident on the outskirts of Port-of-Spain, Trinidad on January 4. Watson, a member of the Shorter women’s soccer team, is in critical condition at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital.
