A Georgia Baptist Institution
April 12, 2013 - Jessica White, a senior at Shorter University, will present her senior research exhibition titled “Vanitas” from April 15 to 19. Hosted by Shorter’s Visual Arts Department, the exhibit will be in Shorter’s Arnold Art Gallery and is open to the public at no charge weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A closing reception will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, and is open to the public at no charge.
White will graduate from Shorter in May, having earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and a minor in education. Her exhibit partially fulfills graduation requirements for the BFA.
White uses her affinity for old photographs by putting a contemporary spin on historical vanitas still-life paintings from the 17th century. In her artist’s statement, she wrote, “My paintings display a diverse assembly of cherished memories from my family’s past that represent the simpler instances in life. I sourced these photographs as a way to tap into the nostalgia found within the depths of our common psyche.”
