Shorter University music faculty to perform with Balkan String Quartet February 24

February 10, 2012 - Several members of Shorter University’s music department will perform alongside the Balkan String Quartet on Friday, Feb 24, at 7:30 p.m. The free concert will take place in Brookes Chapel, located on the main campus in the Cooper Fine Arts Building.

The Balkan Quartet is a dynamic and inspiring string group comprised of violinist Sinisa Ciric and violist Mirna Ogrizovic-Ciric from Serbia; American violinist Patrick Ryan; and Bulgarian cellist Martin Gueorguiev. The quartet performs traditional string repertoire, combined with the works of contemporary composers. The quartet is in residence at the Georgia Perimeter College in Atlanta.

Joining the quartet will be Matthew Hoch, assistant professor of music; Sherri Weiler, associate professor of music; Chuck Chandler, assistant professor of music, and Deborah Popham, assistant professor of music. Performances will include Dover Beach, by Samuel Barber, Il Tramonto, by Ottorino Respighi, On Wenlock Edge, by Ralph Vaughan Williams (with Ben Harris, Shorter’s instructor of accompanying on piano), and La Bonne Chanson, by Gabriel Faure.
