January 10, 2012 - Rachel Rogers, senior woman administrator for athletics and director of athletic development at Shorter University, is one of eight Rome residents selected as recipients of the 2012 Heart of the Community Awards. The recipients are individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to improving the community through volunteerism and humanitarian efforts. Rogers will receive the 2012 Young Heart Award. At age 29, Rogers is well known for her community spirit and selfless volunteerism. She is an active participant in the Feed the Hungry Program at Thanksgiving and a key member of the NAIA Football National Championship Host Committee. She has volunteered with the Tour de Georgia, the Clocktower Classic US Handcycling Event, the Open Door Home, and the Community Kitchen. She sponsors a child in Zambia, Africa, and recently took part in a mission trip to Haiti. She is an active member of Young Professionals of Rome and serves as advisor for the Chi Phi Fraternity. A native of Hiawassee, Ga., Rogers is a 2004 graduate of Shorter and earned her Master of Arts in Leadership from Shorter in 2010. The foundation works to improve health and promote education in the Rome and Floyd community.
