Shorter College students find success at Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival

March 3, 2010 - Shorter College musical theatre and theatre students had an impressive showing during the recent Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

Senior Jonathan Altman, a native of Warner Robbins, won the Southeastern Theatre Conference Musical Theatre Award during the festival. Altman was partnered with Shorter student Elizabeth Telford of Duluth. The Musical Theatre Award is given to the student performing the most impressive musical theatre scene at the competition. “I was honored to be the recipient of that award for a musical scene with the help of my wonderful scene partner, Elizabeth Telford,” said Altman. “It was an incredible experience, and I felt very honored to receive an award. I am incredibly grateful to all the wonderful Shorter College staff who got me there, helped prepare me for the competition, and taught me so much over these four years.”

Four Shorter students, including Altman, traveled to the Kennedy Center festival and competed thanks to an Irene Ryan nomination. Those students included Altman, Michael Lindsey, of Madison, Hannah Strickland, of Athens, and Charlie Wright, of Alpharetta.

The Irene Ryan nominations were based on the students’ mainstage productions performed at Shorter College. Shorter students competed in Region IV, which consisted of nine states and more than 250 students. On the first day of competition, three of the four Shorter students, Altman, Strickland and Wright, were chosen as semi-finalists. On day two of the festival, two of Shorter’s students, Altman and Wright, were selected as finalists.
