Shorter College’s Arnold Gallery hosts exhibit of composite photographs
September 1 - The Arnold Gallery at Shorter College is hosting an exhibit of composite photographs by David Underwood, chair of the art department at Carson-Newman College. The exhibit continues through Sept. 17 and is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no charge for admission.
Underwood will attend a closing reception and present an artist lecture at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, at the gallery.
Underwood’s composite photographs utilize a variety of subject matter and construction techniques. Most of his recent assemblages include a mixture of color and black-and-white component original photographs, which are stapled to archival backings.
“My work attempts to expand the language of still photography beyond the limitations of the single-image, by exploring the various aesthetic and thematic possibilities of the composite photograph,” he wrote in his artist’s statement. |

His work has appeared in more than 100 exhibitions around the country and is included in the permanent collections of a dozen museums.
