Shorter College Softball’s Breast Cancer Awareness & Fundraising Drive Breast Cancer is the second leading cause of death of females. It is a disease that has most likely affected or will affect our lives in one way or another – either through a personal experience or through a family member or friend. Shorter Softball would like to take this opportunity to remind you just how unfortunate this disease is and how important early detection is. Several members of our Shorter College “family” have shared their experience and encounter with this disease. We would like to thank them for their heart-felt words and even more motivation behind our fundraising drive. Like many other women’s sports teams, Shorter Softball feels very strongly towards women’s health and female-specific issues that may affect any one of us at any time. Many sports teams have gotten involved in fundraising for certain causes and/or hosting events in honor of those who have suffered from such a disease. Holding this Breast Cancer Awareness & Fundraising Drive is one of the many ways that Shorter Softball is able to contribute to our surrounding community. In the fall of 2007, Shorter Softball raised & donated $5,000 to the opening of Cancer Navigators – a local facility centered around the research, recovery, and support of breast cancer. A huge “Thank You” goes out to all of those who contributed to the drive. October is known as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” so there will be several fundraising activities Shorter Softball will sponsor throughout the month. Please show your support of the females in your lives, the Rome community, and Shorter Softball by participating in any/all of these activities:
T-Shirt Sale - Last year, over 200 pink t-shirts were sold by the members of the Shorter Softball team not only to raise money, but also to help raise awareness by wearing them out in the community. T-shirts are available until September 29 for only $10. Please see any team member for purchase or details or email Head Softball Coach Melanie Carter at mcarter@shorter.edu. Football Game Collection - Donations were taken by members of the Shorter Softball team at the gate, concession stands, and throughout the crowd at a home Shorter Hawks Football game. On October 18th, this collection will take place during “Championship Saturday” which features the Hawks vs. North Greenville University beginning at 1:30 at Barron Stadium. Members of the 2007 Shorter Softball Team will also be receiving their 2007 SSAC Championship rings at half-time of the game. Raffle - Raffle tickets will be sold for a Polaroid MP3 Player with audio, video, media, and AM/FM capability. Tickets will be available on campus, at the “Border Battle for Breast Cancer” Tournament, and at the Shorter Hawks Football game. Please see a Shorter Softball team member for purchase or details. ###
