Online Journal Chronicles Shorter College Students' International Experiences This Summer

Shorter College students and faculty are traveling the globe this summer and journaling about their experiences abroad. Excerpts of their updates have been compiled into an online journal that will be updated regularly; visitors to the Shorter College Web site, www.shorter.edu, can keep up with the students’ experiences by clicking on the “Shorter Abroad Updates” button.

From May 5-29, 15 Shorter College students are traveling in England and Russia with Dr. Robert Darville, dean of the School of Business Administration, and Dr. Brian Nedvin, assistant professor of music. Students earn 12 hours of class credit for courses including “Field Experience in Study Abroad,” “Directed Study in Global Awareness,” “Theatre Appreciation” and “Business and Culture”.

They are based at Regents College in London until Saturday, May 17, when they will continue their studies in Moscow and the Golden Ring area of Russia.

Upcoming online updates are expected from students individually studying abroad and doing international mission work this summer. Junior early childhood education major Sarah Iserman and junior English major Amy Goggins begin their study abroad experiences today in Austria and Italy, respectively. Junior business major Derek Chriscoe will study in Spain beginning June 1, and senior Spanish major Raven Brock will study in Costa Rica beginning July 7. More than a dozen students will complete international mission trips throughout the summer as well.

Additionally, Shorter Chorale members will send updates during their 10-day tour of Italy beginning next week. Under the direction of Shorter alumna Dr. Martha Shaw, the choral ensemble of 43 Shorter students and five faculty/staff members will perform in Rome, Florence, Verona and Venice. This includes performing in St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City; they will sing Mass at the historic basilica, where the Pope often presides.

Other online travel journals include recent reflections from Jordan, Israel and Canada.
