Shorter College Announces Speaker for December Commencement - 12/05/2007
Brig. Gen. Michael H. Alexander will be the featured speaker at Shorter College’s 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. commencement exercises on Saturday, Dec. 15. Both ceremonies will be held in the college’s Winthrop-King Centre.

Shorter College Chorale Performs at Spivey Hall - 11/19/2007

Shorter College hosts annual Pottery, art sale - 11/16/2007
Shorter College’s Art Department will host its annual pottery and art sale from Wednesday, Nov. 28, to Friday, Nov. 30, in the Fitton Student Union on Shorter’s campus. The sale is open to the public each day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Shorter College Announces Emergency Notification System - 11/15/2007
Shorter College has adopted a new notification system that enables the school to send urgent news to students, faculty and staff who register for the service. Known as Shorter2U, Shorter’s system can be utilized to provide alerts regarding emergency situations, severe weather advisories and school closings.

Shorter College recognizes Dr. Mike Keown of Coolidge, Ga., as its 2007 Minister of the Year - 11/14/2007
Dr. Mike Keown of Coolidge, Ga., a 1977 graduate of Shorter College, received Shorter’s 2007 Minister of the Year Award. The award was presented at the Shorter College Luncheon held Nov. 13 in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Georgia Baptist Convention in Augusta, Ga.

Dr. Regina Zona to Present Faculty Recital - 11/12/2007
Dr. Regina Zona, assistant professor of music at Shorter College, will present a faculty recital in Brookes Chapel at Shorter College on Monday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m. The recital is open to the public at no charge.

Shorter Volleyball Captures SSAC Championship - 11/10/2007
In the final round of the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament, the Lady Hawks beat the Lee University Flames, 3-2, to capture their first-ever championship title, and to receive an automatic bid to the region tournament.

Football Pounds Lambuth, 42-18, in Final Game of Season - 11/10/2007
In their final game of the season, the Shorter College Hawks football team beat the Lambuth University Eagles on Saturday afternoon, 42-18, at Barron Stadium to end the season with a 7-4 (3-3 Mid-South conference) record.

Shorter College Presents Annual Feaste of Caroles - 11/07/2007

Region Championship belongs to Hawks cross country - 11/03/2007
After only its second year of re-formation, the Shorter College men's cross country team will be heading to Kenosha, Wis. for Nationals after taking first place in the Region Championship at Berry College on Saturday morning.

The Shorter College women's cross country team took third place at the Region XIII meet this morning at Berry College, with Magrina Chepkoech leading the team with a second place overall finish.

Hawks basketball start season with 75-73 win over Bryan - 11/02/2007
In Chad Warner's first game as head coach, and Shorter College's first men's basketball game of the season, the Hawks downed the Bryan College Lions, 75-73, in the Berry Classic at Berry College on Friday night.

Shorter Chorale Releases Christmas CD - 10/31/2007
The Shorter Chorale, the premiere performing ensemble of Shorter College, has released a Christmas CD titled A Savior from on High. The CD is the first Shorter Chorale recording to be nationally released, according Dr. Martha Shaw, conductor.

Shorter College Trustees Name Student Apartment Building, Elect New Officers - 10/29/2007
The Shorter College Board of Trustees voted on Friday, Oct. 26, to name the college’s new student apartment building “Newman Hall” in honor of the college’s president, Dr. Harold E. Newman.

Shorter College Chorale Celebrates 40th Anniversary on Nov. 10 - 10/26/2007
The Shorter College Chorale will celebrate its 40 th anniversary by performing a fall concert on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 5 p.m. in Shorter College’s Brookes Chapel. Under the direction of Dr. Martha Shaw, this concert will feature both the 2007-2008 Chorale and the Reunion Chorale, composed of members from the past 40 years.

Shorter College Student Artwork on Display at Arnold Gallery Beginning Nov. 6 - 10/26/2007
Shorter College ’s Arnold Gallery will soon exhibit the best artwork students have created in studio coursework this semester. The art student exhibition, featuring work by Shorter’s art majors, will begin with an awards presentation and reception at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6. The exhibit, which is open to the public at no charge, will be displayed through Nov. 16.

Shorter College Adds Master of Education Program - 10/10/2007
Having received approval from the Professional Standards Commission and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Shorter College now offers a Master of Education with a major in curriculum and instruction through the Professional Studies (adult-degree) program.

Shorter College Football enters NAIA Top 25 - 10/10/2007
After its fourth straight win on Sat. Oct. 6, the Shorter College Hawks football program entered into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ Top 25 poll on Monday evening at number 24. This is the first time Shorter has broken into the poll this season.

Charles W. Whitworth Jr., professor of English Renaissance studies in Montpelier, France, will give a lecture at Shorter College on Monday, Oct. 8, at 4 p.m. in the Austin Moses Room. Shorter College Presents Distinguished Alumni Awards - 10/04/2007
Shorter College’s Alumni Governing Board honored four Shorter graduates with its 2007 Distinguished Alumni Awards. The awards were presented during halftime of the college’s homecoming game on Saturday, Sept. 29. Rome, Ga., resident Dr. Carmen Acevedo Butcher, a 1982 graduate of the college, received the Distinguished Alumna Award.

Shorter Chorale To Be Featured on NPR in Atlanta - 10/02/2007
The Shorter Chorale will be featured on the radio program “The Atlanta Music Scene” at 9 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 8, on WABE 90.1 FM, the National Public Radio affiliate in Atlanta. The hour-long program will include selections performed by the Shorter Chorale under the direction of Dr. Martha Shaw in Shorter’s Brookes Chapel in March 2007 and at Spivey Hall in 2005.

The Shorter College Hawks football team improved to 4-1 on Saturday afternoon as they beat the Union Bulldogs (0-5) at Barron Stadium in Rome, 41-17. The Hawks are now tied with their franchise-high best start.

Shorter College Signs Two Agreements with International Affiliates - 09/28/2007
Shorter College’s Office of International Programs has signed agreements with Study Abroad Italy and the Institute for American Universities, providing expanded study abroad opportunities for Shorter students. The college holds similar agreements with more than 50 institutions on six continents.

Shorter College Slates Ribbon-Cutting for New Student Apartment Building and Open House at New Professional Studies Center - 08/13/2007
Shorter College will officially open its new student apartment building with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 20. The event will be held in front of the new facility on Shorter’s Rome campus. Following the ceremony, at 3 p.m., an open house will be held at Shorter’s new Professional Studies Center, located at 408 Shorter Ave., Rome.

Lattanzi Named Interim Commissioner of Southern States Athletic Conference - 08/08/2007
Following the retirement of longtime Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Commissioner Bill Ensley, Shorter College Director of Operations Ricci Lattanzi has been named the interim commissioner. Ensley retired at the close of the 2007 school year following over 20 years of leadership.

Shorter College Receives $750,000 Challenge Grant Toward Library Campaign - 07/31/2007

Trustee's Generosity Helps Knight Scholarship Fund Reach $100,000 Endowment Level - 06/28/2007
The generosity of a Shorter College trustee and his wife have helped bring the endowment of the William and Mary Ann Knight Performers Scholarship Competition fund at Shorter College to more than $100,000. Col. and Mrs. Harvard Hopkins donated $24,800, which was matched by the Charles and Carol Lamar Fund of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation.

Softball ranked first in region; Barber wins Conference, Region Pitcher of the Week - 04/03/2007
The honors keep piling up this week for the Shorter College softball team as the NAIA has ranked the Lady Hawks number one in Region XIII softball action. Additionally, Lady Hawks pitcher Elisabeth Barber has been awarded Region XIII Softball Pitcher of the Week, after winning the conference Pitcher of the Week yesterday.

Shorter College Graduate Jamie Barton Wins Metropolitan Opera’s 2007 Young Opera Singers Competition - 04/02/2007
Jamie Barton, a 2004 graduate of Shorter College, is one of six winners of the Metropolitan Opera’s 2007 National Council Auditions, a program designed to discover promising young opera singers and assist in the development of their careers.

Shorter College’s Dr. Matthew Hoch Receives National Award - 03/26/2007
Dr. Matthew Hoch, assistant professor of music at Shorter College, has been named one of two national recipients of the 2007 NATS Vocal Pedagogy Award. The award is presented annually by the Foundation of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) to fund educational projects related to vocal pedagogy and voice science.

2007 Football Schedule and Promotional Calendar Announced - 03/22/2007
The Shorter College Hawks football team will play 11 games during the 2007 season, five at home and six away. For the first time, each of the five home games at Barron Stadium will have a featured special event/promotion.

Matthew Hoch to perform faculty voice recital at Shorter College March 27 - 03/20/08
Baritone Matthew Hoch will present a faculty voice recital at Shorter College on Tuesday, March 27. He will be assisted by Shorter music faculty members Dr. Linda Lister, soprano, and Elizabeth Blood, pianist. The recital, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in Shorter’s Brookes Chapel, is open to the public at no charge.

Shorter College Announces Restructuring of Athletic Leadership Team - 03/16/2007
Shorter College President Harold E. Newman announced the restructuring of the college’s athletic leadership team, effective Friday, March 16. Seasoned business executive Bill Peterson will now serve as Athletic Director, overseeing the college’s intercollegiate athletics program.

Shorter College Prepares to Begin Construction of 48-Bed Residence Hall - 03/15/2007
Shorter College announced today that it has signed a contract with Pinson’s Inc. of Rome to construct a new residence hall on the college’s Rome campus. The estimated cost of constructing and furnishing the residence hall is $2.644 million; $1 million of the funds has been provided by the Georgia Baptist Convention.

Students at Shorter College stayed up late on Thursday, Feb. 22, but this time it was not for studying. Instead, they celebrated raising $14,430 through Up ‘til Dawn, a program dedicated to the life-saving work of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Shorter’s entry included papers produced during the 2006 calendar year, which spanned two academic years.

Dr. Matthew Hoch Receives Music Fellowship - 2/8/2007
Dr. Matthew Hoch, assistant professor of music at Shorter College, has been named one of seven national recipients of the Melodious Accord Fellowship to study with Dr. Alice Parker. The fellowship allows Dr. Hoch to spend four days of intense private study with Dr. Parker at her home in Hawley, Mass., in June.

Alumni e-Newsletter Honored with Award of Excellence - 2/7/2007
Shorter College’s alumni e-newsletter received a district honor from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, the international professional organization for public relations, fund-raising, and alumni relations personnel in education. Virtually Shorter received an Award of Excellence in the Electronic Newsletters and Tabloids category, competing against entries from schools in a nine-state region.

Dr. Robert Wallace Named Director of International Programs at Shorter College - 2/1/2007
Dr. Robert Wallace, assistant professor of religion at Shorter College, has been selected to serve as director of international programs for the college. His duties include coordinating study abroad opportunities for students wishing to study at one of the institutions with which Shorter has an exchange agreement; Shorter currently has such agreements with educational institutions located on six continents. Also, Dr. Wallace will assist faculty members with the organization of study abroad trips.

Shorter competes in ETSU Niswonger Indoor Track Invitational - 1/30/2007
The Shorter College men’s and women’s track teams competed in their first meet in over 40 years on Jan. 26 & 27 in Johnson City, Tenn. at East Tennessee State University’s Niswonger Indoor Track Invitational.

Shorter College presents Bebo Norman at the Forum -  1/22/2007
Christian recording artist Bebo Norman will perform with Alli Rogers and Brandon Heath at the Forum in Rome, on Sunday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. The concert is presented by the Shorter College admissions office and Shorter’s Student Government Association.

Shorter College ranked a ‘best value’ by Princeton Review - 01/10/2007
Shorter College has once again been ranked as one of the nation’s best value undergraduate institutions, according to The Princeton Review’s 2008 edition of America’s Best Value Colleges. This marks the fourth consecutive year Shorter has been included in the Princeton Review’s best-of lists.

Shorter College opens enrollment for community art classes -  1/10/2007
During a six-week Saturday morning session, community members have an opportunity to explore the art of salt-fired ceramics and darkroom photography at the Shorter College Art House on Horseleg Creek Road. Classes will be held Jan. 27 through March 3 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Shorter College theatre receives prestigious invitation - 1/10/2007
For the fourth time in five years, Shorter College’s theatre department has been invited to perform at the American College Theatre Festival for Region IV. Shorter’s production of “Into the Woods,” directed by Tim Bohn with musical direction by Rick Gomez, will be performed on Friday, Feb. 9, at 8:30 p.m., in Americus, Ga.

Shorter College named to College of Distinction guidebook - 1/2/2007
Shorter College will be included in the 2007 Colleges of Distinction guidebook, a national publication of Student Horizons, Inc.
