Shorter College Announces Speaker for December Commencement

Brig. Gen. Michael H. Alexander will be the featured speaker at Shorter College’s 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. commencement exercises on Saturday, Dec. 15. Both ceremonies will be held in the college’s Winthrop-King Centre.

Prior to his retirement from the Air Force in 1986, Alexander earned one of the Air Force’s highest ranks for commissioned officers and served as a command pilot with more than 3,600 flying hours. The brigadier general held leadership positions with many military organizations including the Worldwide Military Command and Control System, Hanscom Air Force Base, Arnold Engineering Development Center and Air Force Headquarters. He also served as a forward air controller in 420 combat missions in Vietnam. Alexander enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.

A decorated military veteran, Alexander is a U.S. Military Academy graduate. He also holds a Master of Science in operations research from Case Institute of Technology and a Master of Public Administration from George Washington University. Additionally, Alexander is a graduate of Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College and the National War College.

Following his successful military career, Alexander served as an independent defense consultant and CEO of Miltope Corporation during the company’s restructuring. He moved to Rome, Ga., in 1995 with his wife, the former Margaret Arrington. He is active in St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, the Rotary Club, the American Legion and the Masons. He also works with local Boy Scouts and as an adjunct math professor at Georgia Highlands College. He and his wife have four children and five grandchildren.

Alexander’s wife, her mother and her grandmother all attended Shorter College.

An estimated 201 students receiving the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science in Education, Bachelor of Business Administration, the Master of Business Administration, and the Master of Arts degrees will take part in the 10 a.m. ceremony. The 2 p.m. ceremony will include approximately 203 students receiving the Associate of Science, Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, and Bachelor of Science in Management degrees.
