Shorter College Opera Theatre Presents "From Carthage to Rome"

The Shorter College Opera Theatre will present its fall opera, “From Carthage to Rome: Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas & Robert Ward’s Roman Fever,” Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 25-28. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday in Callaway Theatre on the Shorter College campus. General admission tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students and senior adults. For tickets, contact the Shorter College box office at (706) 233-7288.

The performance includes both 17th and 20th century selections all sung in English. The opera is directed by Dr. Linda Lister, assistant professor of music at Shorter College. Elizabeth Blood, instructor of music, provides musical direction, and Dr. Matthew Hoch, assistant professor of music, serves as the opera’s chorus master.

The Opera Theatre explores early music in Purcell’s Baroque classic. Based on Virgil’s Aeneid, the opera features sailors, spirits and sorcery, but stars the ill-fated love of Dido, Queen of Carthage, and Aeneas, future founder of the Roman Empire.

Contemporary composer Robert Ward brings Edith Wharton’s short story to life in his operatic realization of Roman Fever. Two American widows vacationing in Rome, Italy, realize they have quite a lot in common in this opera’s surprise ending.

For additional information please contact Dr. Linda Lister at llister@shorter.edu, (706) 233-7362 or (706) 346-5228.
