Shorter College Slates Ribbon-Cutting for New Student Apartment Building and Open House at New Professional Studies Center

Shorter College will officially open its new student apartment building with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 20. The event will be held in front of the new facility on Shorter’s Rome campus. Following the ceremony, at 3 p.m., an open house will be held at Shorter’s new Professional Studies Center, located at 408 Shorter Ave., Rome.

Those taking part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony will include Dr. Harold E. Newman, Shorter College president; Dr. Nelson Price, chairman of the college’s Board of Trustees; Stephanie Owens, vice president of finance and chief financial officer; Dr. Debra Faust, vice president of student affairs and dean of students; Carrie Fitzsimmons, a senior who serves as president of the Student Government Association; and the Rev. Allen Hill, director of the Education Commission of the Georgia Baptist Convention. Dr. Brian Nedvin, assistant professor of music, will present a musical selection.

Shorter began construction on the three-story, apartment style residence hall in March 2007. The building, which provides living space for 46 students, is located behind the Sheffield-Thompson Building and west of Roberts Hall. Pinson’s Inc. of Rome is the general contractor for the project. The estimated cost of constructing and furnishing the building is $2.644 million; approximately $1.4 million of the funds has been provided by the Georgia Baptist Convention.

The 8,000-square-foot Professional Studies Center, located at 408 Shorter Ave., Rome, will serve as an identifiable home for Shorter’s adult-degree programs in Rome. The building includes five offices and seven classrooms. The classrooms will be available for use by both traditional and adult-degree (Professional Studies) classes. Shorter’s Professional Studies program offers degrees at the Associate’s, Bachelor’s and Master’s level to working adults; classes are offered at four locations: North Atlanta, Lawrenceville, Riverdale and Rome.
