Shorter College opens enrollment for community art classes

During a six-week Saturday morning session, community members have an opportunity to explore the art of salt-fired ceramics and darkroom photography at the Shorter College Art House on Horseleg Creek Road. Classes will be held Jan. 27 through March 3 from 9 a.m. to noon.

The community art program is a relaxing environment for beginner to advanced students instructed by Shorter art majors. Enrollment is open now and limited to eight per course. For more information, contact Chris Kelly, assistant art professor, at (706) 233-7283 or ckelly@shorter.edu.

In the ceramics course participants will explore the effects of wheel-thrown pottery and hand building in a salt-fired kiln. Clay, glazes and firing costs are included in the $130 course fee.

In the photography course participants will explore studio techniques for developing images in a darkroom. Participants must supply their own camera and black-and-white film. Paper, chemicals and other equipment are included in the $175 course fee.

Additionally Shorter College alumna Siri Gundersen will provide drawing and painting lessons to community members of all ages and skills. To enroll in the drawing and painting lessons call (706) 409-3022 or e-mail siri@studiosiri.com.
